Ja, en ik heb er stante pede op geantwoord. Het is hoogst eigenaardig gesteld met de BBC. Ik heb reeds meermaals op radio-uitzendingen hen het woord "Dutch" horen gebruiken, wanneer ze het over Flanders hebben. Anderzijds duiken er regelmatig commentatoren op die het hebben over "Flemish". In elk geval ik heb hen prompt een e-mail gestuurd.
Citaat:
Dear Sir,
As a Flemish citizen with Belgian nationality, I wish to draw your attention to a serious misconception about the language of Flanders. Our language is not "Flemish", but Dutch. This is even explicitely stated in the Belgian constitution. Certainly, we Flemish speak our Dutch with a Flemish accent, just like the Austrians (or even the Bavarians) pronounce their German with a different accent. With regard to the English language, the same can be said for the Scots. The Flemish newspapers, the newsreaders on Flemish TV and Radio all use Dutch, the same language as in the Netherlands. "Flemish" is a designation for the different local dialects which can be heard in Flanders. Regrettably, some people in Flanders still continue to use the word "Flemish" to indicate our formal language, which is Dutch.
