Symbolism in art. Look for it in wikipedia. Only ignorant trash will see theis image as realistic.
I was at the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, which has a collection of symbolist paintings bought by the brother of Johanna Bonger, Andries Bonger in Paris. In my mind the Indonesians are very much into the symbolism, spirit world and things etherical, to explain his love for this style.
