Overall, Ukraine has dropped 3 positions in UN Human Development Index.

Recent developments are starting to derail the economy’s fragile recovery. The government formalized an economic blockade of the rebel-held eastern regions on 15 March, escalating a tense political situation that has seen rebel factions seize a number of Ukrainian companies located in their territory. The trade ban has severed vital links in the country, including transport of coal and other industrial goods, and has started to take a toll on economic data: industrial production plummeted in February. On a bright note, the government received USD 1.0 billion in fresh funds from the IMF on 3 April. However, the Fund warned that a number of reforms need to be implemented to secure additional aid going forward. Continued support from the IMF is critical for the country’s outlook, yet reform momentum has been sluggish due to little political willpower.
De economie daalde tussen 2014 en 2016 met 17% volgens de wereldbank. De exporten met 30 % en importen met 25 %. In 2017 wordt een groei verwacht van maximum 2 procent, maar dat was berekend volgens de meest gunstige voorwaarden, en voor het totaal embargo tegen Donbas was ingevoerd. De Oekraïeners hebben de neiging om zichzelf in de vernieling te rijden.

De Russische economie daalde 3,5% in 2015 en 0,6% in 2016, en verwacht een groei van 1.7% in 2017, wat vergelijkbaar is met België. De crisis werd vooral veroorzaakt door de zeer lage olie- en gasprijzen, ook de Noorse economie kromp bijvoorbeeld. Nu de prijzen weer stijgen ziet het er goed uit voor de Russische economie. De Russische economie kromp in totaal met 5% sinds de Oekraïense crisis uitbrak. Rusland ligt met andere woorden niet wakker van de westerse sancties. Het land is er ontzettend veel beter aan toe dan Oekraïne.
