De Russen weten nog goed hoe het was onder Yeltsin, die door het Westen gesteund werd. Toen was Rusland inderdaad grotendeels een leeg land met alcoholisten, met gemiddelde maandlonen van 50$ per maand en massale armoede. De Russische economie kende een onvoorstelbare remonte de laatste 15 jaar, en dat het nu enkele jaren slechter zal gaan nemen Russen er bij. De meeste zijn er trouwens van overtuigd dat het om een westers complot gaat.

Waarom zou het maar enkele jaren slechter gaan?
De voorbije 15 jaar waren de jaren van de olie- en gasbubbel, die totaal verspild werden, er is geen enkele economie uitgebouwd.
Rusland zit nabij een recessie, uitkeringen en pensioenen en salarissen van ambtenaren zullen meer en meer zakken of zelfs niet betaald worden terwijl alles duurder en duurder zal worden.
Ondertussen wordt Putin internationaal neergezet als 'moordenaar' (ivm Litvinenko) die de FSB gebruikt als privé-moordorganisatie en ook wordt hij nu openlijk corrupt genoemd door amerikaanse hoge ambtenaren van financien.
Natuurlijk weet iedereen al jaren dat Putin veruit de rijkste man van europa is, wellicht van de wereld zelfs (waarbij 40 miljard Dollar uiteraard een groteske onderschatting is, doe dat maar maal 4 mininaal) , maar dat het nu officieel gezegd wordt, tot op de BBC, is alweer grensverleggend.
De sluiers worden afgetrokken. De Gremlin staat meer en meer in zijn blootje op het internationaal toneel.

The US government imposed sanctions against a number of Kremlin insiders in 2014 and stated that Vladimir Putin had secret investments in the energy sector. However, the Americans did not directly accuse him of corruption at the time.
The sanctions - later expanded to include more individuals and organisations - coincided with similar EU measures against Russia. The trigger for them was Russia's annexation of Crimea, during political turmoil in Ukraine.
The US Treasury's Adam Szubin speaks of a "picture of corruption"
US government officials have been reluctant to be interviewed about President Putin's wealth, but Mr Szubin agreed to take part in a BBC Panorama programme investigating the issue.
Mr Szubin would not comment on a secret CIA report from 2007 that put Mr Putin's wealth at around $40bn (£28bn). But he said the Russian president had been amassing secret wealth.
"He supposedly draws a state salary of something like $110,000 a year. That is not an accurate statement of the man's wealth, and he has long time training and practices in terms of how to mask his actual wealth."
