Here’s the next catalyst for Tesla that has bulls fired up

Published: Sept 11, 2017
...

Some buyers are being drawn this morning to Tesla, undeterred by critics who have called it “the loudest canary in Wall Street’s coal mine” and worse. A bunch of traders and pundits are saying the electric-car maker and its peers look set for more gains, thanks to a possible ban on gasoline-powered cars in China, the world’s largest auto market. They combine to provide our call of the day.

Tesla TSLA, (+4.54%) “could be a big winner” in this development, writes Fortune’s David Z. Morris. Elon Musk & Co. have made headway in the Chinese market as they work on rolling out their lower-priced Model 3 sedan, he adds.

And electric cars are reaching “a tipping point,” says Bloomberg’s David Fickling. Nearly 80% of the global auto market is now “pushing toward phase-out of petroleum cars and adoption of electric vehicles,” he notes.

Work has begun in China on a timetable to ban the manufacture and sales of traditional cars, reports the government-backed news agency Xinhua, citing comments from a vice minister of industry and information technology. That helped Chinese electric-car maker BYD (+4.55%) finish 5% higher in Hong Kong’s session, and Tesla is gaining in U.S. premarket action. China’s news comes after the U.K. and France have promised to ban the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars by 2040.
