On Monday, it was the Russians who were playing the role of “deus ex machina,” appearing out of nowhere to save Obama at the very last minute from what seemed to be his certain defeat in Congress and his no less spectacular crash in American public opinion. Suddenly, the plot twisted, the storyline changed, the main characters assumed completely different roles: Obama the hapless schlemiel was cast as a clever Machiavellian; Vladimir Putin metamorphosed from ruthless Rasputin to a knight on a white horse –albeit with his shirt on –and Bashar Assad, one must concede, seemed surprisingly solid and steady in his interview with Charley Rose.

Jerusalem, of course, will keep a wary and suspicious eye on the diplomatic maneuvers that will take place over the next few days. First of all, with the Administration embracing a diplomatic dialogue, Israel and its supporters and lobbyists are in danger of being stranded and depicted as frustrated warmongers.

Israel will also be unhappy with Assad suddenly being cast as a legitimate interlocutor rather than an ostracized dictator, with the “constructive” role that Tehran might suddenly play in defusing the Syrian crisis and with the risk that Russian success in Syria may lead it to seek a greater role in other peacemaking endeavors as well. “With the food comes the appetite”, as a famous originally French saying goes

Worse, perhaps, is the danger that Assad will try to walk in the footsteps of his onetime Ba’athist neighbor, Saddam Hussein, who, in the days of diplomatic maneuvers before the first Gulf War, created the infamous “linkage” between his withdrawal from Kuwait in late 1990 and Israel’s withdrawal from Palestinian territories.

Having justified his huge reserves of chemical weapons for years as Syria’s strategic response to Israel’s alleged nuclear stockpile - the so-called “Poor Man’s Atomic Bomb” gambit – it will also come as no surprise if Assad demands that Israel also be compelled to ratify the Chemical Weapons Convention, which it hasn’t, and to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as well.

Such a demand will most likely garner sympathy for Assad in the Arab, Muslim and Third World and could go a long way to resuscitate his tarnished image in the Arab street. Judging by his composure in the Charlie Rose interview, Assad should not be taken for granted: he seems to have learned a thing or two from his father Hafez, who was a world grandmaster at political poker and strategic brinkmanship.

Wel, de stemming wordt toch uitgesteld tot eind van de week, tegen dan zou er een resultaat moeten zijn van de UN experten.

Als het werkelijk 4 jaar duurt om die chemische rommel op te ruimen dan begrijp ik niet waarom de VS en Israël het regime willen doen vallen, dat wordt een catastrofe als de rebellen die in handen krijgen.

Men zou bijna beginnen denken dat het de VS helemaal niet te doen is om chemische wapens en burgerslachtoffers? Obama zal trouwens op zijn bek gaan in het Huis v Afgevaardigden.

Geen complottheorie, maar een intelligente analyse. Je bent overigens het scherpe einde vergeten:

Het is inderdaad een prachtige analyse en aangenaam om te lezen, vandaar dat ik deze C/P plaatste, niet integraal echter want dat is tegen het reglement. Voor het einde van het verhaal moest men even de site bezoeken waar het artikel trouwens aangenamer leest. Wat een geluk dat dit excellent schrijfsel eens niet achter hun hatelijke betaalmuur zit.

Ach, wat de 'conspiracy' betreft, laat ons dat maar in het midden laten, het was een goed lokmiddel en U hebt het artikel uiteindelijk gelezen. Ik veronderstel dat U daar geen spijt van hebt. Ik zal niet onder stoelen of banken steken respect te hebben voor President Obama,zelfs na schijnbaar ongelukkige maneuvres de laatste tijd.

In de praktijk heeft hij een reddingsboei aangegooid gekregen van Russisch president Putin die,mogelijk na eerst wat getouwtrek met zijn betere contacten in Damascus(en mogelijk ook Teheran) een zeer plausibel denkschema in de ring gegooid heeft.

Chemische wapens zijn potentieel een zeer ernstig probleem...Welnu,haal ze daar weg...

Omdat ook President Obama eigenlijk niet helemaal zeker meer was van het resultaat van de stemmingen in de Amerikaanse senaat en het congres (hij riskeerde daar zelfs een blauwtje te lopen) kan hij op de "PAUSE" knop duwen......

...eerst moet gezien worden wat de modaliteiten zijn van het weghalen van chemische wapens naar "een" veiliger plaats....
Dat is al een uitdaging op zich....wie doet wat,naar waar,en wie controleert.......



Uit gans deze ongelukkige affaire kan een model voor een nieuwe internationale orde komen,een orde die zich niet bemoeit met de "details" van een conflict(may the best win ) ,maar wel kan opleggen bepaalde wapensystemen die gevaar kunnen opleveren voor niet betrokkenen,weg te halen uit de schietbaan.....

En tenslotte merkte de president ook nog op dat de VS NIET de politiemacht van de wereld wil zijn,maar dat de VS ook niet aan "speldeprikken" wenst te doen....

De VS is dan wel niet in burgeroorlog maar een minderheid heeft evenzeer de macht. Iemand die daar iets over durft te zeggen wordt onmiddellijk de mond gesnoerd met de term "antisemitisme", behalve als het Joden zelf betreft, die mogen dat wel en geven ook grif toe dat Joden zwaar oververtegenwoordigd zijn in de VS.
