De onmogelijkheid een oorlog te beginnen door een economische ineenstorting... Het zou best kunnen.

Doch zie ik in de VS al enkele tijd maatregelen die die oorlog toch mogelijk moeten maken of mss zelfs overleven, hoe anders kan je dingen zoals FEMA camps en de aankoop van een ongelooflijke hoeveelheid ammunitie, de militarisering van de politie, of het laten bedijen van een nieuwe rassentegenstelling verklaren?

Waar slaat dit op? Men brengt toch bepaalde zaken in stelling die erop duiden dat de gevestigde elite ondanks een ineenstorting, zij het economisch of anders,de macht niet wil afstaan.

Ik veronderstel dat de auteur stelt dat indien er zich een ongecontroleerde crash voordoet de overheid gedurende die chaos geen grootse oorlog meer kan plannen.

Voor de crash van 2008 werd olie aan 45us$ verhandeld heden is het reeds tot 60 'teruggevallen'. Misschien komt de crash wel vroeger dan verwacht.

The price collapse could not have come at a worse time for Bad Vlad Putin. The Russian president needs an oil price around $100 a barrel to prop up what’s become a wartime economy.

Oil and gas provide up to a third of budget revenue and compose two-thirds of exports.

Sanctions imposed over Putin’s aggression have gnawed at Russia’s economy, but this price drop bites deep: The ruble has crashed, Russian bonds are pathetic, and foreign reserves are bleeding.

While Russians will put up with harder times than Westerners will, Putin’s made extravagant commitments (bet he’d like to have back the $50 billion he squandered on corrupt Olympic construction).

The world’s fave bare-chested bully had embarked on a massive arms buildup, with a hi-tech $5 billion command center just unveiled. But Putin’s visions of military resurgence are becoming unaffordable

He also made election promises to improve Russia’s wretched health-care system. Instead, he’s firing health-care workers and shuttering hospitals.

He promised higher living standards, but now the average Ivan’s feeling squeezed. And Putin faces enormous costs in Crimea and eastern Ukraine, two booby-prize welfare states, with the latter shot to ruins.

Putin’s popularity remains high. For now. The gravest worry is that, with his back to the wall, he’ll play the Mother Russia card and attack again.

Alberto Nisman, de Argentijnse openbare aanklager is dood teruggevonden (schotwond) enkele uren voor hij zou getuigen tegen presidente Kirchner i.v.m. bomaanslagen uit de jaren 80' tegen joodse doelwitten. Die zouden zijn gepleegd door Iraanse cellen, met medeweten van de Argentijnse regering (of die zouden het in elk geval in de doofpot hebben gestopt).

Buitenland Alberto Nisman, de Argentijnse openbare aanklager die achter president Cristina Fernandez aanzat, is dood aangetroffen met een schotwond in zijn lichaam. Dat meldt persbureau AP. Nisman verdacht Fernandez ervan de Iraanse verdachten van een bomaanslag op een Joods-Argentijns buurthuis in Buenos Aires te beschermen.

Nisman werd dood aangetroffen in de badkamer van zijn appartement, bevestigt aanklager Viviana Fein tegenover het Argentijnse persbureau Telam.





“We kunnen bevestigen dat er een schotwond is, van een wapen van 22-kaliber”.

Wat er precies gebeurd is, is nog niet duidelijk. De minister van veiligheidszaken Sergio Berni heeft volgens Reuters gezegd dat “alles er op wijst dat het om een zelfmoord gaat”. Nisman zou volgens hem gevonden zijn met het wapen en een kogelhuls naast zich. Oppositieleider Patricia Bullrich heeft tegen lokale media gezegd dat Nisman bedreigingen had ontvangen na de beschuldigingen aan het adres van de president.

Nisman had maandag voor het congres moeten getuigen in de zaak over de bomaanslag in 1994, waarbij 85 doden vielen en meer dan tweehonderd mensen gewond raakten. De aanslag op het AMIA-centrum was de grootste terroristische aanslag in Argentinië ooit.

Nisman was tien jaar geleden als speciaal aanklager in de zaak aangesteld door de toenmalige president, de inmiddels overleden echtgenoot van Christina, Nestor Kirchner. Hij was overtuigd dat Iran en Hezbollah achter de bomaanslag op het Joodse centrum zaten. Iran heeft dat altijd ontkend. Interpol vaardigde op verzoek van de Argentijnse justitie in 2007 arrestatiebevelen uit voor twee Iraanse attachés.

Vorige week beschuldigde Nisman president Fernandez en andere hoge politici ervan dat zij zich ervoor hebben ingezet om de arrestatiebevelen in te trekken. Ze wilden zo de betrekkingen met Iran normaliseren. Argentinië verkeert in een economische crisis en is hard op zoek naar bondgenoten en goedkope olie - die Iran zou kunnen leveren.

Nisman wilde dat Fernandez voor de onderzoeksrechter zou verschijnen. Hij had zijn zaak met een dossier van driehonderd pagina’s onderbouwd. Hij schreef:


“De president en haar minister van buitenlandse zaken hebben het misdadige besluit genomen om Iran’s onschuld te fabriceren, om zo de commerciële en politieke belangen van Argentinië te beschermen.”

Joodse gemeenschap

De grote joodse gemeenschap in Argentinië - er wonen 200.000 joden in het Zuid-Amerikaanse land - heeft verslagen gereageerd op de dood van Nisman. Julio Schlosser, hoofd van de joodse gemeenschap, noemde het een ‘catastrofe’. Volgens Schlosser is Nisman “onvervangbaar” vanwege zijn jarenlange inzet en kennis die hij daarmee heeft opgebouwd.

TRAPANI, Sicily — NATO is launching its biggest military exercise in 13 years, mobilizing 36,000 soldiers, sailors and airmen from more than 30 countries to test the alliance's ability to respond to new security threats.

NATO Deputy Secretary-General Alexander Vershbow told the opening ceremony Monday that the Trident Juncture exercise will demonstrate that NATO "can deal with everything from conventional military engagements to more subtle hybrid warfare techniques and propaganda."

Vershbow said the geopolitical situation is considerably more unstable than the last time such large-scale exercises were held during the Cold War, citing Russia's annexation of Crimea, support of eastern Ukrainian separatists and attacks against moderate rebels in Syria, as well as the spread of terror groups into Libya and Syria.

Van alle Europese landen is het Verenigd koninkrijk nog het onafhankelijkste van de VS. Als ik volgende commentaar lees:

Moscow’s missile defense system can protect the city against any kind of ballistic missile, according to Colonel Andrei Cheburin, commander of the missile defense division of the 1st Air Defense Army of the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces.

“Right now it is the only system in the world capable of intercepting any kind of ballistic missile coming from any direction, including missiles specifically designed to bypass missile defense systems,” Cheburin revealed in a Monday interview with Russian media.

He also added that the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces are about to upgrade the Moscow missile defense facilities.

“The Moscow missile defense system is a complex automated network which includes both information and weapon systems. The missile defense forces under my command are directly responsible for the combat readiness of the entire system,” he said.

The colonel also mentioned that the missile defense elements protecting the Russian capital are directly linked to the ballistic missile early warning and space monitoring systems.

The disclosure reveals a modest breakthrough in military–to-military communication and cooperation between the US and Russia beyond the very basic “memorandum of understanding” (MOU) signed in October last year which focused on safety protocols for both Russian and American air crews operating in Syrian airspace.

“We provided a geographical area that we asked them to stay out of because of the risk to US forces,” Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook told reporters Thursday, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The request was an attempt to maintain special forces’ safety “in a dangerous situation.” It was made outside the scope of the flight safety memorandum, Cook said.

Up to this point, the Russian military “has honored this request,” he added.

The MOU between the US and Russia arrived in October 2015, after the Russian Air Force began intense strikes against Islamic State (IS, formerly known as ISIS/ISIL) in Syria. Currently the only official document regulating the two militaries’ conduct, it is limited in scope because Moscow and Washington have sharply different military goals in Syria.

In December 2015, the US began deploying special forces teams of up to 50 operators into northeastern Syria to support Syrian rebel groups fighting there. Cook said that around the same time, high-level Defense Department officials shared information on the general location of those troops with the Russian Ministry of Defense. He declined to say whether the US and Russia had any formal written agreement.

Air Force Lieutenant General Charles Brown Jr., head of the US Air Force Central Command, told journalists in a briefing from his office in Qatar that the request to Russia was informal.

“I don’t have any assurances, really, from the Russians. But we told them … these general areas where we have coalition forces. And we don’t want them to strike there because all it’s going to do is escalate things,” Brown told reporters, as quoted by the Military Times.

“The Russians have actually outlined some areas — some of the airfields that they're worried about, that they don't want us flying close to, and really, typically, we don't fly there anyway. So, that hasn't been an issue.”

Lt. Gen. Brown repeatedly referred to “operational security” and declined to say publicly where US special forces troops are operating in Syria.

The plan drew ire from German politicians who said Sunday that they were not consulted.

The move includes a temporary relocation of the Boeing E-3 Sentry aircraft from Germany's Geilenkirchen Air Base to Konya Air Base. At least a third of the military personnel used in NATO’s AWACS missions are German, Defense News has confirmed.

On Dec. 22, Germany withdrew its Patriot air and anti-missile defense systems from Turkish soil after a three-year-long deployment. The move came shortly after NATO agreed to strengthen efforts to protect Turkey's southern borders and airspace.

The French secret war in Libya involves occasional targeted strikes against IS leaders preceded by discreet ground operations.

The US and British armed forces are also said to be involved in the secret operation aimed at weakening the jihadist group in war-torn Libya.

The French Defense Ministry refused to comment on the report but a source close to Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told Le Monde he had launched an inquiry of the “breaches of national defense secrecy” to reveal the source of the leak. If the sources are found and tried, they may face up to three years' imprisonment.</sub>
