Here’s the next catalyst for Tesla that has bulls fired up

Published: Sept 11, 2017
...

Some buyers are being drawn this morning to Tesla, undeterred by critics who have called it “the loudest canary in Wall Street’s coal mine” and worse. A bunch of traders and pundits are saying the electric-car maker and its peers look set for more gains, thanks to a possible ban on gasoline-powered cars in China, the world’s largest auto market. They combine to provide our call of the day.

Tesla TSLA, (+4.54%) “could be a big winner” in this development, writes Fortune’s David Z. Morris. Elon Musk & Co. have made headway in the Chinese market as they work on rolling out their lower-priced Model 3 sedan, he adds.

And electric cars are reaching “a tipping point,” says Bloomberg’s David Fickling. Nearly 80% of the global auto market is now “pushing toward phase-out of petroleum cars and adoption of electric vehicles,” he notes.

Work has begun in China on a timetable to ban the manufacture and sales of traditional cars, reports the government-backed news agency Xinhua, citing comments from a vice minister of industry and information technology. That helped Chinese electric-car maker BYD (+4.55%) finish 5% higher in Hong Kong’s session, and Tesla is gaining in U.S. premarket action. China’s news comes after the U.K. and France have promised to ban the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars by 2040.

Citaat:
https://www.inverse.com/article/3501...vations-number

During a question and answer portion of Tesla’s second quarter 2017 earnings call on Wednesday afternoon, Musk mentioned that Tesla has received around 518,000 total reservations for the Model 3 since its initial unveiling in April 2016. Of course, there have been some cancellations — over the past year and change, that number has sunk to around 455,000 net reservations.
It’s difficult to pinpoint the numbers any further than that, because since Tesla’s July 28 debut of the Model 3, the company has been receiving 1,800 new reservations every day. That means if you place a reservation now, you’re going to be at least, like, 464,000th in line. Musk said on July 28 that the wait time for a new Model 3 is close to 18 months, or “late next year,” in his words. Fortunately, the company is still selling Model S and Model X vehicles with little to no wait, which is all part of Musk’s plan to “antisell” the Model 3 in order to get people to pay more for a Model S — as Musk said on Wednesday in reference to the Model 3 in showrooms, “We don’t even want to talk about it really.”
“It’s like if you’re a restaurant and you’re serving hamburgers, and there’s an hour-and-a-half wait for a hamburger, do you really want to encourage people to come buy more hamburgers?” Musk said during the call.

At a press briefing yesterday, Musk accepted to give the first update in over a year, but he again reiterated that he doesn’t believe that it reflects demand for the vehicle since they are actively “anti-selling” it:

“We do everything we can to not sell the car.”

Musk added that he expects the number would blow up if they were to actually try to sell it.

The CEO believes that the company already has a big enough backlog to last them through late 2018 if they can reach their production targets.

Citaat:
https://electrek.co/2017/09/13/samsu...tteries-range/
Now they are claiming that they can reach an impressive energy density by using those cells in new modules:

“Multifunctional battery pack” of Samsung SDI attracted the most attention. Its users can change the number of modules as they want as if they place books on a shelf. For example, if 20 modules are installed in a premium car, it can go 600 to 700 kilometers. If 10 to 12 modules are mounted on a regular sedan, it can run up to 300 kilometers. This pack is expected to catch the eyes of automakers, because they can design a car whose mileage may vary depending on how many modules of a single pack are installed.

Unfortunately, they didn’t release many specs beyond that.

Pictures from their booth at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA Cars 2017):
Citaat:

Samsung SDI introduced in its customer exhibition a “high-energy density battery cell of the next generation for a driving range of up to 600km that can fast charge EVs in 20 minutes” as well as an “integrated battery module” concept with a 10% decrease in component units and weight compared to the currently produced models.
Citaat:
http://insideevs.com/ev-battery-make...ity-of-market/

There are five major battery manufacturers was again lead by Panasonic/Tesla with ~6.7 GWh of installed capacity, which was an improvement of 45% from last year, but while still losing some market share (to 32%).

Second largest is BYD, which also noted the highest growth of the major battery makers, growing by 143% last year to 4 GWh. Only Samsung SDI can boast a similar growth rate (130%), but on a smaller scale, at nearly 1.2 GWh worth of production.

Interestingly, if one where to include the commercial business (specifically buses with their huge battery packs) BYD would be #1 in the segment overall…and we guess, it doesn’t really matter what type of EV the cells go into – in the overall EV battery-making game, BYD is now on top.

LG Chem also improved by 60% to 2.3 GWh, while AESC gained just 28% to 1.6 GWh.

Standaard Nieuwe (PH)EV inschrijvingen Europa

http://www.amt.nl/ondernemen/nieuws/...stort-10153761

Laatste stats nieuwe inschrijvingen Europa:

Citaat:

Norway with 29 % Plug-in Share

This diagram shows the share of Plug-ins among all light vehicles sold in a country and the composition of BEVs and PHEVs in the overall share.

The plug-in share in Norway is off the chart, as usual, and still growing. No other country comes close to the 29 % share which Noway has performed during this year. The peak month, so far, was June with 35 %. BEV share was 16 %, PHEV share was 13 % for 2017 H1. EVs have a long tradition in Norway (think Th!nk and Buddy) and EV adoption in Norway started some years ahead of other countries. Thanks to obvious, stable incentives in form of generous tax and toll savings, EVs have become normality for light duty transport, despite long distances and a less than balmy climate. Cheap electricity from 99 % hydropower helps, too.

The mix of BEV vs. PHEV varies a lot between markets, highly depending on the individual incentive schemes. BEVs captured more share compared to 2016, but the current trend is towards PHEVs again, driven by the growing number of entries from German OEM. For 2017 YTD, 53 % of plug-in sales were all-electric in Europe.

It can be expected that future incentive schemes will reduce support for PHEVs and increase them for EVs. An example is the introduction of a tougher "bonus-malus" vehicle taxation system in Sweden from July 2018 onwards.
Duitsland kent de allergrootste stijging, + 100%:

Citaat:

Over 100 % Growth in Germany

The highlight of 2017 is Germany, the largest car market in Europe. Doubling plug-in sales vs 2016 H1 make it the 2nd largest market for electrically chargeable vehicles in Europe.
Higher incentives were introduced in summer 2016, but the real kick came with the Diesel crisis expanding to Europe and the growing insight among leading OEM and legislators, that Plug-ins are a viable alternative. OEM plans for EV portfolios witness about spectacular u-turns, public interest and adoption have made several steps forward.

Nearly all Europe markets showed growth during H1-2017, only Netherlands' buyers still struggle with the incentive shift from Plug-in Hybrids to pure-electric vehicles. France and UK sales show only moderate increases for the first half year; all others have double or triple digit growth during the period, albeit from smaller bases.

In total, Europe plug-in sales grew by 32 %, compared to 2017-H1. Q1 increased 28%, Q2 35%. The preliminary results for July and August indicate that growth is accelerating: July came in + 54 %, August + 69 %, compared to the same months of last year.
http://www.ev-volumes.com/country/to...cle-volumes-2/

Citaat:
*Rapid shift back towards EVs

With the success of the BYD Qin and Tang PHEVs, the mix shifted towards plug-in hybrids in 2015. Additionally for 2016, subsidies became depending on all-electric range, with 100 km as a minimum requirement for BEVs. Many of the ever so popular mini-EVs had to be upgraded to retain subsidies in China. This caused low sales of mini-EVs during Q1 and strong rebound during the 2nd half of the year. New Smart-type models with decent specs and range, like the Zotye E200 EV contributed strongly to the revival.

We have recently started the worldwide tracking of regular hybrid vehicles (HEV), with some interesting results: Total HEV sales in China added up to just 85 000 units in 2016, only 13 models were on sale and apart from some hundreds for Buick, Honda and Nissan, the entire volume came from Toyota and their luxury division Lexus.

China leads in passenger car volume and in electric busses

Since it took off in 2014, the Chinese NEV market has increase over five-fold, a development which is unmatched by any country with notable Plug-in sales back then. Since 2014, the number of OEM in the field (with over 100 units sales) has increased from 14 to 21. The number of available plug-in models (with more than 10 units sales) from 29 to 68.

Our detailed, regular reporting is for the passenger car market. In addition, over 150 000 commercial vehicles were sold in the NEV category in 2016, 80 % of them are large buses, most of them fully electric. Regarding electric busses, 98 % of world sales are in China, today. The domestic sales leader is Yutong, the export leader is BYD.

http://www.ev-volumes.com/news/china...and-full-year/

Citaat:

Europe Plug-in Sales for H1 of 2017 + Updates for July and August

Plug-in vehicle sales in Europe reached 135 100 units in the first half of 2017, 32 % higher than for the same period of 2016. These include all Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) and Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV) in Europe, of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. Plug-in share of the European light vehicle market reached 1,63 % in June, the trend so far indicates further increases during the reminder of the year. Results from July and preliminary August indicate that growth is accelerating.

The German market is the highlight of 2017, with over 100 % increase over 2016 H1, making it the second largest market for plug-ins in Europe, after Norway. Plug-in share in Norway is 29 % for BEV and PHEV combined. A good indication of what is possible with compelling savings on vehicle taxes, much lower running cost and a well developed charging infrastructure.

Nearly all countries post growth for 2017, many of them over 100 %, but from still low volumes. For the full year of 2017 we expect 305 - 310 000 plug-ins to be delivered in Europe, up 25 000 units from our previous forecast.

Tesla’s Supercharger network just reached a new milestone today: 1,000 Supercharger stations worldwide.

While it’s a significant milestone for what is undoubtedly the most extensive DC fast-charging network in the world, Tesla still has a long way to go to reach its year-end goal.

The milestone was achieved by opening a new Supercharger station in Franklin Park near Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania today.

It became the 1,000th Tesla Supercharger location in the world with a total of 6,934 Supercharger stalls.

It was also the 226th new station that Tesla brought online this year alone, which shows that they are growing the network rapidly but is it fast enough to reach Tesla’s ambitious goal of having 10,000 Supercharger stalls by the end of the year?

Here’s the growth of Tesla Supercharger stations over the years via Supercharge.info, https://supercharge.info/ :

Citaat:

https://ev-database.nl/vergelijk/nie...ektrische-auto

Ik citeer even alles:

Tesla delivers record 26,150 vehicles, only 220 Model 3 sedans

Fred Lambert - Oct. 2nd 2017

Tesla confirmed today its third quarter 2017 delivery numbers and the automaker delivered a record number of vehicles, including a few Model 3 sedans for the first time.

The automaker had previously guided over 23,000 Model S and Model X deliveries during the third quarter and it significantly beat the guidance with 14,065 Model S sedans and 11,865 Model X SUVs.

It represents a 4.5% increase quarter-over-quarter and 17.7% increase over the same period last year.

It’s a new record global delivery number for Model X – beating the previous record in Q1 2017 by over 300 units.

As for Model S, it’s the third highest number for Model S delivered, which shows that the launch of Model 3 had a minimal impact on deliveries so far.

Here’s a chart of Model S and Model X global deliveries since the launch of Model S back in 2012:

Tesla also confirmed production of 25,336 vehicles during the period and 4,820 Model S and X vehicles in transit at the end of the quarter.

As for Model 3, Tesla confirmed slow production of only 260 units:

“Model 3 production was less than anticipated due to production bottlenecks. Although the vast majority of manufacturing subsystems at both our California car plant and our Nevada Gigafactory are able to operate at high rate, a handful have taken longer to activate than expected. It is important to emphasize that there are no fundamental issues with the Model 3 production or supply chain. We understand what needs to be fixed and we are confident of addressing the manufacturing bottleneck issues in the near-term.”

That’s significantly below the production of 1,500 units that Tesla guided during the handover event in July.

As we reported last week, Tesla ran into early manufacturing issues with Model 3 production, but it more recently showed signs of increasing production.

The company is not changing the vehicle’s delivery schedule for Model 3, but it slightly increased guidance of “about 100,000 Model S and X vehicles in 2017,” which would require just over 26,000 vehicles during the fourth quarter.

Tesla’s press release in full:

Citaat:
PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 02, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — In Q3, Tesla delivered 26,150 vehicles, of which 14,065 were Model S, 11,865 were Model X, and 220 were Model 3. This was our all-time best quarter for Model S and X deliveries, representing a 4.5% increase over Q3 2016, our previous best quarter, and a 17.7% increase over Q2 2017.

We had previously indicated that second half Model S and X deliveries would likely exceed first half deliveries of 47,077, but we now expect to exceed that by several thousand vehicles. In total, we expect to deliver about 100,000 Model S and X vehicles in 2017, which would be a 31% increase over 2016.

In addition to Q3 deliveries, about 4,820 Model S and X vehicles were in transit to customers at the end of the quarter. These will be counted as deliveries in Q4 2017.

Q3 production totaled 25,336 vehicles, with 260 of them being Model 3. Model 3 production was less than anticipated due to production bottlenecks. Although the vast majority of manufacturing subsystems at both our California car plant and our Nevada Gigafactory are able to operate at high rate, a handful have taken longer to activate than expected.

It is important to emphasize that there are no fundamental issues with the Model 3 production or supply chain. We understand what needs to be fixed and we are confident of addressing the manufacturing bottleneck issues in the near-term.

Our delivery count should be viewed as slightly conservative, as we only count a car as delivered if it is transferred to the customer and all paperwork is correct. Final numbers could vary by up to 0.5%. Tesla vehicle deliveries represent only one measure of the company’s financial performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results, which depend on a variety of factors, including the cost of sales, foreign exchange movements and mix of directly leased vehicles.
