Standaard Libertas says Brussels moving further away from democracy as Barroso already announce

José Manuel Barroso, who became the unelected President of the European Commission in 2004 following a series of backroom deals and compromises, is already announcing his plans for his next undemocratic five year reign in Brussels.

Barroso, whose performance as Commission President has never had to undergo any official review or who has never had to be accountable to voters, has been using the financial crisis in media interviews this week as an excuse to firm up a quick decision on his second term. “We need the institutional stability because the crisis is extremely serious,” he said.

Barroso rules over 27 European Commissioners, none of which have been elected to their positions and none of which are accountable to citizens throughout Europe. Up to 80% of national laws come from Brussels. All legislation is initiated by the European Commission.

Libertas wants all European Commissioners and the Commission President to be elected so that they are accountable at the ballot box to voters throughout Europe.

Libertas Chairman Declan Ganley said “that the people of Europe have no say in who gets this all-powerful position is yet another example of the anti-democratic policy in Brussels. Instead of bringing Europe closer to its people, Mr. Barroso - an appointment of compromise, not a real leader - has spent most of his term wheeling and dealing for a second backroom appointment. How has his performance been assessed? These Brussels elites are afraid of democracy because they know what the democratic verdict would be.”

Libertas.eu is a pro-European movement committed to bringing more democracy, accountability and transparency to European Union law-making and institutions.

In June, Libertas-backed candidates will run across the 27 member countries of the European Union for the European Parliament elections. Libertas.eu seeks to have the European voters’ mandate to reform the EU. This is the first time a pan-European party will contest the European elections.
