Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System
pdf
A purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash would allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution. Digital signatures provide part of the solution, but the main benefits are lost if a trusted third party is still required to prevent double-spending. We propose a solution to the double-spending problem using a peer-to-peer network. The network timestamps transactions by hashing them into an ongoing chain of hash-based proof-of-work, forming a record that cannot be changed without redoing the proof-of-work. The longest chain not only serves as proof of the sequence of events witnessed, but proof that it came from the largest pool of CPU power. As long as a majority of CPU power is controlled by nodes that are not cooperating to attack the network, they'll generate the longest chain and outpace attackers. The network itself requires minimal structure. Messages are broadcast on a best effort basis, and nodes can leave and rejoin the network at will, accepting the longest proof-of-work chain as proof of what happened while they were gone.

The blockchain is a public ledger that records bitcoin transactions. A novel solution accomplishes this without any trusted central authority: maintenance of the blockchain is performed by a network of communicating nodes running bitcoin software. Transactions of the form payer X sends Y bitcoins to payee Z are broadcast to this network using readily available software applications. Network nodes can validate transactions, add them to their copy of the ledger, and then broadcast these ledger additions to other nodes. The blockchain is a distributed database – to achieve independent verification of the chain of ownership of any and every bitcoin amount, each network node stores its own copy of the blockchain. Approximately six times per hour, a new group of accepted transactions, a block, is created, added to the blockchain, and quickly published to all nodes. This allows bitcoin software to determine when a particular bitcoin amount has been spent, which is necessary in order to prevent double-spending in an environment without central oversight. Whereas a conventional ledger records the transfers of actual bills or promissory notes that exist apart from it, the blockchain is the only place that bitcoins can be said to exist in the form of unspent outputs of transactions.
In August 2014, the bitcoin blockchain file size reached 20 gigabytes.
In January 2015, the size had grown to almost 30 gigabytes, and
from January 2016 to January 2017, the bitcoin blockchain grew from 50 gigabytes
to 100 gigabytes in size.

Bitcoin Witboek:
Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System
pdf
oktober 2008
Explaining blockchain — how proof of work enables trustless consensus
The main innovation that Satoshi Nakamoto introduced in his article is using so-called proof of work (POW) to create distributed trustless consensus and solve the double-spend problem. POW is not a new idea, but the way Satoshi combined this and other existing concepts — cryptographic signatures, merkle chains, and P2P networks — into a viable distributed consensus system, of which cryptocurrency is the first and basic application, was quite innovative.

Proof of work is a requirement that expensive computations, also called mining for reasons which later will become clear, be performed in order to facilitate transactions on the blockchain. To understand the link between computational difficulty and trustless consensus within a network implementing a distributed cryptocurrency system is a serious mental feat. With this writing I hope to help those who are attempting it.

Because distributed trustless consensus is the primary innovation of blockchain technology, we start by understanding what it is. As the term suggests, there are three parts to the puzzle: (1) consensus, (2) distributed, and (3) trustless. Having explained the three terms, I will synthesize them by illustrating the problem that arises when you put all three together. In the process we will see how a distributed ledger based on POW solves this problem.

What is consensus?
(...)

Distributed
(...)

Trustless
(...)

PoW Blockchain
(...)

Bitcoin approach
(...)

Proof of work
(...)

Conclusion
When presented with a new cryptocurrency solution, the reader is now empowered to ask herself, based on the above explanation, how it is that the solution achieves distributed trustless consensus. Similarly, when considering using a system based on POW, the reader is in position to understand that POW is only useful when trustless consensus is required, otherwise it is an expensive and needless waste of resources.

There now exist solutions which do not use blockchains, but still strive to achieve distributed trustless consensus, Iota being one example. Furthermore, there are so-called consortium blockchains, which apply some of the ideas developed in decentralized cryptofinance to facilitate transactions between mainstream financial entities. While it is not clear what exact approach they will use, it is clear from the above explanation that POW would be a feature entirely unnecessary in such systems, since they don’t have to function in a trustless fashion.

With all the hype around cryptotechnology I hope that this article could be helpful in navigating the complexity and diversity of this space.

Vandaag 1 augustus 2017 wordt bitcoin cash [symbool = BCC] gelanceerd. Een parallelle bitcoin.
https://www.bitcoincash.org/
Vandaag gebeurd.
At 18:24:41 UTC, ViaBTC pool produced a 1.9 MB BCC block, which was not valid on the legacy Bitcoin network. This marked a clean break and the birth of Bitcoin Cash. Bitcoin Cash brings sound money to the world. Merchants and users are empowered with low fees and reliable confirmations. The future shines brightly with unrestricted growth, global adoption, permissionless innovation, and decentralized development. All Bitcoin holders as of block 478558 are now owners of Bitcoin Cash. All Bitcoiners are welcome to join the Bitcoin Cash community as we move forward in creating sound money accessible to the whole world.
Het geciteerde blok:
Blok 478558
Over ViaBTC:

Wat is een "bitcoin mining pool"?
Bitcoin mining pools are a way for Bitcoin miners
to pool their resources together
and share their hashing power
while splitting the reward equally
according to the amount of shares
they contributed to solving a block.

Citaat:
The Basic Attention Token (BAT) is an ERC20 Token based on the Ethereum Blockchain. It’s main goal is to provide a digital ad exchange to allow advertisers the ability to purchase ad space and user “attention”?—?the same product that Google and Facebook provide when selling ad space.
Brave wants all advertising revenues to be based on BAT.

Advertisers will pay for ads using BAT and users will be compensated for viewing ads in BAT.
Citaat:
In the ecosystem, advertisers will give publishers BATs based on the measured attention of users. Users will also receive some BATs for participating. They can donate them back to publishers or use them on the platform. This transparent system keeps user data private while delivering fewer but more relevant ads. Publishers experience less fraud while increasing their percentage of rewards. And advertisers get better reporting and performance.

The first part of the solution, the Brave browser, is already operational. Brave is a fast, open source, privacy-focused browser that blocks ads and trackers, and contains a ledger system that anonymously measures user attention aggregate to accurately reward publishers.
Citaat:
BAT represents a fundamental rethinking of the way digital ads are delivered. The current model depends on third-party tracking (tracking browsing history, cookies, and search queries) and middlemen that connect advertisers with users.

BAT removes the need for third-party tracking and middlemen by matching and delivering ads locally from an inventory catalog of available ads and offers.
https://basicattentiontoken.org/about/
