Europe plans giant billion-euro quantum technologies project

The European Commission has quietly announced plans to launch a €1-billion project to boost a raft of quantum technologies — from secure communication networks to ultra-precise gravity sensors and clocks. The initiative, to launch in 2018, will be similar in size, timescale and ambition to two existing European flagships, the decade-long Graphene Flagship and the Human Brain Project.

Europe Invests €1 Billion to Become "Graphene Valley"

The European Commission (EC) last week announced a €1 billion investment in graphene research and development that will be spread over 10 years. The aim of the huge funding initiative will be to smooth the path for pushing graphene from the research lab to the marketplace. The initiative has been dubbed "The Graphene Flagship," and apparently it is the first in a number of €1 billion, 10-year plans the EC is planning to launch. The graphene version will bring together 76 academic institutions and industrial groups from 17 European countries.

The project is funded primarily by the Swiss government and the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Flagship grant from the European Commission. The EPFL bought the Blue Gene computer at a reduced cost because at that stage it was still a prototype and IBM was interested in exploring how different applications would perform on the machine. BBP was viewed a validation of the Blue Gene supercomputer concept.

As of 2015, IBM seems to have ended the development of the Blue Gene family though no public announcement has been made. IBM's continuing efforts of the supercomputer scene seems to be concentrated around OpenPower, using accelerators such as FPGAs and GPUs to battle the end of Moore's law.

Over OpenPower:

The goal stated is to enable the server vendor ecosystem to build their own customized server, networking and storage hardware for future data centers and cloud computing.
