U.S. Ship Fires on Motorboat in Gulf of Suez; 1 Dead
Monday , March 24, 2008

CAIRO, Egypt —

An Egyptian man was shot dead and two others wounded in an incident involving a U.S.-flagged cargo ship transversing the Suez Canal in the direction of the Mediterannean Sea, reported security officials late Monday.

After sunset, a motor boat carrying three Egyptians approached the "Global Patriot" with the intent of selling products when the ship opened fire on it with tracer bullets killing Mohammed Fouad and wounding the other two occupants, said an Egyptian navy official on customary condition of anonymity.

A police official in Cairo, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident, adding that some hundred other boat vendors had since gathered near the cargo ship and were demanding an investigation into the shooting.

There is a "Global Patriot" registered to the New York-based Global Container Lines and, according to the company Web site, the vessel trades between the United States, the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf and the East Africa.

Company representative Homruz Shayegan told The Associated Press by telephone from New York that he had no information on the incident.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Fifth Fleet based in Bahrain also had not heard about the event.

According to the Egyptian naval official, the ship had sailed from Dubai and was transporting used military equipment. It had completed crossing canal and was in a waiting area, known as the Zenobia Lighthouse, in preparation to enter the Mediterranean when the incident took place.

US vessel 'shoots at Suez boat'
A US container ship approaching the Suez Canal has opened fire on a small Egyptian motorboat, killing one man and wounding two others, reports say.
The Global Patriot, carrying used US military equipment, was in the Gulf of Suez when it was approached by a motorboat selling local merchandise.

Its crew apparently fired after the boat failed to heed warnings to stop when asked, the US navy said.

It added that it was in contact with Egypt through the US embassy in Cairo.

As many as 100 other local vessels are said to have gathered at the scene, carrying hawkers demanding an inquiry.

Some 7.5% of world sea trade passes through the Suez Canal, which is 190km long (118 miles) and 120m wide (395ft) at its narrowest point.

Military charter

It was after sunset on Monday when a motorboat carrying three local Egyptian traders approached the Global Patriot in the Gulf of Suez as it prepared to sail towards the Mediterranean, according to Egyptian officials.

The Global Patriot's crew are reported to have ordered the motorboat to stop and when it did not, they opened fire, killing Mohammed Fouad and wounding two others, the officials added.

A US naval spokeswoman, Cdr Lydia Robertson, said that the Global Patriot had warned the small boats to turn away "via bridge-to-bridge radio and a series of warning steps".

"One small boat continued to approach the motor vessel, which then reportedly fired warning shots."

Confirming that the incident was under investigation, she added:

"Fleet authorities are working cooperatively with Egyptian authorities through the US Embassy in Cairo."

Cigarettes

A spokesman for Global Container Lines told the Associated Press that he had no information about the incident.

According to the US Navy's Military Sealift Command (MSC), the Global Patriot is a US-flagged roll-on, roll-off container ship chartered from Global Container Lines.

In the past, it has been used by the MSC to transport a US military Patriot Missile defence battery, ammunition, and MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicles around the world.

On this occasion, the Global Patriot is said to have been transporting used US military equipment from Dubai.

The BBC's Heba Saleh in Cairo says fisherman and small boats carrying hawkers ply the waters of the canal trying to sell cigarettes and other local products to ship passing through.

It is not clear why those on board the Global Patriot opened fire.

Al-Qaeda militants have in the past used small motorboats to attack US military and other foreign vessels in waters off the coast of Yemen, our correspondent adds.

Dyn Marine Services to operate MV Global Patriot

Former Buffalo Soldier to employ AMO in commercial trade and preference markets
The former MV Buffalo Soldier will return to service as the Global Patriot and will be manned in all licensed positions by American Maritime Officers members.
Global Container Line recently purchased the U.S.-flagged multi-purpose cargo ship, which will be operated by Dyn Marine Services under contract with AMO.
Built in 1978, the 19,669 DWT Global Patriot will transport rolling stock, containers, project cargo, heavy-lift cargo, break-bulk and bulk cargo between the U.S., Red Sea, Arabian Gulf and East Africa, according to a report in Lloyd's List.
The Global Patriot will also be available to carry U.S. food-aid cargoes, 75 percent of which must be shipped aboard U.S.-flagged vessels under a 1985 cargo preference law.
"We are very pleased to see this ship returning to service under AMO contract," said AMO National President Michael McKay. "The Buffalo Soldier was a valuable asset to the U.S. fleet when we manned it for Red River Shipping and RR&VO. The Global Patriot will continue to serve U.S. economic and security interests under the management of Dyn Marine."
Global Container Lines was founded in 1985 in Long Island, New York, by the Paksima family and has grown into a 25-vessel operation in the foreign liner trades, according to the Lloyd's List report.
The company is also an established operator in the food-aid and project-cargo trades. Using chartered tonnage, Global Container Lines shipped food-aid cargoes to Afghanistan in 2001 and to Iraq in 2003, according to the report.
