Angola Inks $1Bln Arms Deals With Russia

Russia’s state arms export monopoly has signed a $1 billion deal package with Angola to deliver military equipment, build an ammunition plant and provide maintenance services, Vedomosti business daily reported Wednesday.

Rosoboronexport will supply 18 Su-30K fighter jets to the southern African nation, the daily said, citing sources at the arms exports company and the Russian military.

Angola Dictatorship in New Crackdown on Citizens

Human rights groups in Angola on Wednesday denounced an escalation in police brutality against civilians since the start of the year in the oil-rich nation.

"In recent months we have seen high levels of police violence in Angola against peaceful protests, street vendors, journalists, activists and human rights defenders," a group of around 20 organisations said in a statement.

The groups criticised the "inhumane and cruel" treatment of prison inmates, after a video showing police and firemen beating prisoners in the capital Luanda was widely circulated on social networks.

"The police, who are supposed to protect us, commit the worst acts," Angelo Kapwatcha of university development group Fordu told AFP.

The broad coalition of human rights, environmental and development organisations across the country collaborate under an umbrella organisation, the Working Group for the Monitoring of Human Rights in Angola.

The country's interior ministry has condemned the violence and launched an inquiry to find the culprits.

Since the end of a civil war a decade ago Angola's economy has grown fast, and the country is now Africa's second-largest oil producer after Nigeria.

But most of its citizens live in poverty, and civil society groups as well as international organisations regularly complain of police abuse.

"Our political governance system was built on violence and the exclusion of the poor or those who are different. That is what we should attack," said Elias Isaac from pro-democracy group the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa on Wednesday.

Angola's strongman President Jose Eduardo dos Santos has governed the country for the past 34 years. He won general elections in August 2012 -- only the third since the country's independence in 1975.

Een kleine drie miljoen vaten olie per dag oppompen levert aardig wat deviezen op.
Hoewel de inkomsten uitgedrukt worden in slechts een % op de verkoop levert dat veel op.
Als Rusland bij een volgende contract Angola betere voorwaarden aanbiedt, waarom niet?
Wat de wapens betreft: China en de VS willen ook wapens verkopen.

Het is mij overigens onduidelijk waarom de opener van deze topic de term dictatuur gebruikt.
Angola heeft een regering die verkozen werd.
Er is discussie over die verkiezingen, maar, dit is Afrika.
De democratie is daar niet te vergelijken met de onze.

Wat die vijand betreft: er zijn potentiële disputen met de DRC over olievelden voor de kust van beide landen.

De inkomsten van de olie verdwijnt volledig in de zakken van een paar politici en de exploitanten. De staat zal wel wat toucheren maar geen miljard om wapens aan te schaffen.

Noch de DRC noch Angola zullen een grootschalig conflict uitlokken. Dat het hier en daar op lokale botsingen uitloopt is niet zo uitzonderlijk. In heel Afrika heb je van die zwervende troepen waarvan niemand weet tot welke club ze behoren. Ze leven van roof en plundering en het aanhouden van transporten.
De Yasser Arafat doctrine, weet je wel. Die had een vergelijkbaar systeem in Libanon.

Hoeveel Cubanen zitten er nog in Angola?

Een goeie vraag. Die importeerden ook de HIV/AIDS in Cuba.
De Portugezen aldaar verzamelden op grote schaal patroonhulzen en boden die op de internationale markt als schroot aan.
Er zijn nog wat andere hulpbronnen, zoals diamant, maar ook dat levert weinig op. De melée doet iets van 80-100 $ per crt.
