Tens of thousands of people have been fleeing California towns downstream from the Oroville Dam after fears of an imminent collapse of its spillway prompted an evacuation order. Authorities are seeking to stem the breach with the help of helicopters.

“Immediate evacuation from the low levels of Oroville and areas downstream is ordered. This is NOT A Drill. This is NOT A Drill. This in NOT A Drill,” says the statement posted on the Butte County Sheriff’s Facebook page.

The statement refers to the Lake Oroville Dam, located 105 km (65 miles) north of Sacramento.

Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said the evacuation orders affect 188,000 people, AP reports.

The dam’s spillway was “predicted to fail within the next hour,” the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) said at around 4:30pm PST Sunday (00:30 GMT Monday).


Dit betreft de grootste dam in California. Wegens slecht weer en hevige regenval staat het water in de dam tot op 2 meter van de rand.

The Oroville Dam in California finds itself in a situation with the only way to avert an over top of the dam is using an untested emergency spill way built in the 1960's as the regular spillway was damaged by a sinkhole and has stopped drainage of the lake.



De gebruikelijke noodafvoer van overtollig water zit verstopt en men is dus aangewezen op het gebruik van een niet eerder geteste noodafvoer gebouwd in de jaren 60.

Tot voor kort was het probleem daar dat er te weinig water was.

En steeds een leuke manier om energie op te wekken.

Echter, wanneer men na lange droogte hevige regenval krijgt wil men zo'n dam steeds zo vol als mogelijk krijgen en dan moet men plots de dus spillover gebruiken om het overtollige weg te krijgen. Ik heb zulke zaken eerder gezien. Oroville dam zit nu op 110% van de capaciteit.

Nog erger wordt wanneer er een sinkhole in de primaire spillover zit, waar men dus lange tijd niets aan gedaan heeft (Make California Great Again lol).

erosion chewed through the main spillway during heavy rain earlier this week, sending chunks of concrete flying and creating a 200-foot-long, 30-foot-deep hole that continues growing. Engineers don’t know what caused the cave-in, but Chris Orrock, a Department of Water Resources spokesman, said it appears the dam’s main spillway has stopped crumbling even though it’s being used for water releases.

The lake is a central piece of California’s government-run water delivery network, supplying water for agriculture in the Central Valley and residents and businesses in Southern California.

Wat mij betreft vertonen de uitbaters van deze dam onverantwoord gedrag.

Nog een lesje... velen kunnen niet evacueren, alles zit pottoe. Ongeveer 200.000 mensen on the move (mss meer).
