Hello, I am an English researcher who is trying to find out information

concerning MATHIAS VAN DER GOES the first man to introduce printing
into Antwerp in 1481.

In the very early 1500's a HUGO VAN DER GOES came from Antwerp to
London and then to York and Beverley (1506-10) where he also set up a
printing shop. Some of his fonts came from London, but some and
particularly some blocks for "wallpaper" came from Antwerp - hence
making an association between him and MATHIAS.

On the IGI (www.familysearch.com) I came across a reference to HUGO VAN

DER GOES who died in Brussels on 20 December 1548. He had married
MARIA VAN DER GOES and she died 16 November 1538.

I do not know any of the Flemish/Dutch archives nor know what the
survivial rate of documents are for that period.

Hugo printed very few books, but he did get a commission from Margaret
Beaufort to print the oldest surviving example of printed wallpaper for

Christ's College, Cambridge. Since he appeared to print so few works,
it would seem to make sense that he may have returned to
Antwerp/Brussels. The dates of the death above would fit.

I also wonder if either of these men were related to HUGO VAN DER GOES
the artist.

If anyone can offer guidance or know of specialist researchers, any
information would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

David
