The Boring Company opgericht door...

Deze kan er vandaag ook nog bij. :-D

With the recent launch of Elon Musk’s latest company, Neuralink, we almost forgot that the CEO of both Tesla and SpaceX also recently launched yet another startup: the Boring Company.

The company aims to make important advancements in the cost and speed of digging tunnels in order to solve transportation problems in cities. The startup recently took delivery of its first giant boring machine.

In February, Musk was looking at purchasing a used Herrenknecht boring machine: about 26 feet in diameter, about 400 feet long, and weighs 1,200 tons. The giant machine was in Washington.

It’s not clear if it’s the same machine that has just arrived at SpaceX’s headquarters in Hawthorne, California, but it is certainly similar in size.

The boring machine arrived yesterday and is being positioned in SpaceX’s parking lot where they have already been digging a hole in the ground.

Here are a few pictures by employees and passersby (via Instagram: shockdiamonds, schrodude, ohshebossedup):

In a recent interview, Musk said that they plan to go down to about 50 feet into that hole in the parking lot before starting to dig horizontally in order not to disrupt any gas or sewage line. There, they will be able to experiment with new digging technologies build on the current boring machine.

It’s not clear where they plan to connect this tunnel first, but Musk describes this as the start of a ‘vast underground transportation network’ for cars and hyperloop. It’s quite impressive to think that in SpaceX’s backyard right now there’s an hyperloop test track, the first stage of a rocket booster that launched a satellite into orbit and came back, and now a giant boring machine.

Musk sees tunnels as a solution to traffic in urban areas and a way to bring transportation into the three-dimensional world – like buildings. He wants tens of tunnel levels underneath cities to compensate for people living and working in buildings tens of stories tall.

While the Boring Company is digging its first tunnel at SpaceX, Musk said that the company is not a subsidiary of Tesla or SpaceX, but its own independent company.

Los Angeles mayor sounds open to Elon Musk’s tunneling plan

Published: June 18, 2017

Elon Musk’s concept of solving traffic congestion by digging networks of tunnels may have a fan in Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Speaking about the city’s transit issues Sunday morning on ABC 7‘s “Eyewitness Newsmakers,” Garcetti mentioned the possibility of tunneling: “Like many other cities have, I’d love to see maybe even with the new tunneling technology that people like Elon Musk is looking at, whether we could have a quick and direct route from LAX to Union Station.”

Blijkbaar is het eerste segment van de pijp in LA al geboord.

Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk's underground venture has taken off. According to a series of tweets fired off by Musk last night, Godot, as the boring machine is called, has completed the first leg of its tunneling operation under the streets of Los Angeles.

No longer waiting for Godot. It has begun boring and just completed the first segment of tunnel in LA.

In his tweet, Musk did not specify the exact leg or route that Godot dug. However, a CNBC report has surmised that yesterday's tweet indicated the start of tunneling operations from Culver City to Los Angeles International Airport. Musk has said that the tunnel will run from the airport to Culver City, Santa Monica, Westwood and Sherman Oaks. This announcement marks an important milestone in the history of the company, which was launched less than seven months ago.

Elon Musk releases first image of new tunnel under Los Angeles, announces expansions to LAX and 101
Fred Lambert - Oct. 28th 2017

Elon Musk released this weekend the first image of the Boring Company’s new tunnel under Los Angeles and also expanded on the company’s plans for future segments of the project.

Earlier this summer, Musk ‘s new startup already confirmed having dug a 160-ft tunnel with an entrance in SpaceX’s parking lot in Hawthorne.

In August, they proposed a new 2- mile (3.2 km) expansion of the tunnel under 120th street all the way to Hawthorne Boulevard along the local airport.

The city of Hawthorn quickly gave them the green light to expand the tunnel and continue testing their boring techniques in their jurisdiction.

Here’s the section where they have been approved to dig the 2-mile long tunnel:

Today, Musk confirmed that they have already dug 500 ft of the 2-mile long tunnel, which they expect to complete in “3 to 4 months”.

He released the first images of the progress:
