The High Cost of Aggression

Reminderville, Ohio, and the surrounding township were aghast when the Summit County Sheriff's Department wanted to charge the community $180,000 per year for a 45-minute emergency response time and an occasional patrol. Corporate Security, a private police organization, offered to provide a 6-minute emergency response time and twice as many patrols for one-half of the cost! (1) The community gained the benefits of contracting out - more service for less!

The private company saved its customers money with used cars and equipment. (2) The private police officers enforced the law, while clerical personnel took care of the "social-worker, caretaker, baby-sitter, errand-boy" activities that can amount to 80% of public police work. (3)

Oro Valley, Arizona, enjoyed similar savings when the town contracted out its police work to Rural/Metro in 1975. However, the Arizona Law Enforcement Officers' Advisory Council took the matter to court, arguing that an employee of a private company could not be a municipal police officer. The Council wanted the guns of government to give state troopers an exclusive monopoly on providing police service. Ironically, the public police wanted to use collective aggression against the very people they were supposed to protect from individual aggression!

Over het algemeen ben ik wel geen voorstander van stadsplanning (alhoewel het wel in theorie wel mag) wegens de enorme moeilijkheden daarbij. Jane Jacobs haar boek is daarin geniaal - en die is noch links, noch rechts, noch libertarisch. Die is gewoon nuchter.

ik ben er eigenlijk wel voorstander van. Alle grootkapitalisten verstopt in een zwaar gefortifieerde villawijk.

Vervolgens gooien we alle toegangswegen dicht en schakelen we de stroom uit.

Gated communities zijn niet altijd slecht. Overleef maar zonder als blanke in Zuid-Afrika.

Gated Communities zijn hoofdzakelijk mensen uit de middenklasse - doorgaans mensen die zich door middel van arbeid uit de armoede hebben gewerkt...

Idioten. Ze zijn dom genoeg om nog hun eigen vel te privatiseren.

Van de Verenigde Staten kun je toch wel alles verwachten :D.

Tja, 'communities' is een héél goed concept, maar met dat 'gated' moet je oppassen.

Tis goed om bepaalde liberale globaliseringsdogma's even weg te smijten om het sociaal weefsel in je 'communities' te beschermen, maar als je elk venster op de wereld en elke mondialisering buitensluit, riskeer je een economische, wetenschappelijke e.d. achterstand en negeer je je rechten en plichten in de grotere 'community'.

Mijn aansnijding was destijds bedoeld om enkele reacties te krijgen en ik ben blij dat dit toch enigzins gelukt is.
