SINGAPORE will send a small team of police personnel and deploy an airforce tanker aircraft to the Gulf to aid in bringing stability to the region, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday.

The KC-135 aircraft will be deployed for three months 'as part of Singapore's continuing contribution to the coalition efforts to bring stability to Iraq and Afghanistan', the foreign affairs ministry in a statement.

Singapore will also send a small team of police personnel to help train Iraqi police at a base in Jordan, which neighbours Iraq, the ministry said without giving further details.

The fresh commitment of forces comes after other allies of the United States have vowed to pull their troops out.

Singapore's previous deployment, 31 armed forces personnel on board a C-130 transport plane, returned home three weeks ago from a two-month stint of supply missions in Iraq.

Aside from the C-130 crew, 160 personnel on a landing ship returned to Singapore in February after two months in the Gulf and 32 Singaporean police personnel were deployed last year to train the local police force.

The ministry did not give any details about how many Singaporeans would be part of the latest deployments, or exactly what the aircraft tanker's role would be. -- AFP

Hoeveel zou dit de US gekost hebben ??
