Alle vijf zodanig diep in de leverage dat zij (alle vijf) in faling waren gegaan zonder ingrijpen!

Bear Stearns werd toegekend aan JP Morgan Chase. (16 mrt 2008)

Lehman Brothers werd toegelaten om failliet te gaan (15 sep 2008)
Morgan Stanley kreeg de toestemming om van statuut te wijzigen (21 sep 2008)
Goldman Sachs kreeg de toestemming om van statuut te wijzigen (21 sep 2008)

Toen Lehman Brothers ophield te bestaan stond het hele financiële systeem op het punt van 'ophouden van bestaan'. De statuten van Goldman Sachs en Morgan Stanley werden bij nacht en ontij gewijzigd van 'investeringsbank' naar gewone bank, waardoor ze vanaf dan een beroep konden doen op overheidssteun.
