WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange was at the centre of another political storm yesterday after more than 251,000 US diplomatic cables were published in their original form on the internet for anyone to read.

No attempt was made to redact the cables to protect whistleblowers or other innocent people named in them, provoking fears that some lives could be endangered.

The cables were published in batches, sorted by country, including 34,687 relating to Iraq, 29,431 from China, 19,714 from Afghanistan, 13,209 from Pakistan and 6,732 from Cuba.

Their appearance was announced on Twitter, with messages encouraging followers to read the cables and share what they find. One WikiLeaks tweet declared that it was "shining a light on 45 years of US 'diplomacy'."

Meer dan 25.000 Amerikaanse diplomatieke berichten werden op vrijdag 2 september door Wikileaks online gezet. Zij werden in grote gehelen opgezet, gerangschikt per land en moeten volgens Julian Assange een interessante blik werpen op 45 jaar Amerikaanse diplomatie. Enig probleem: alle namen van informanten en onschuldige mensen staan erin.

Het lijkt wel of Assange meer en meer een losgeslagen projectiel is, wat we ondertussen reeds van voormalige medewerkers mochten horen, dan een betrouwbare informatie-”outlet”. Geen enkele poging is gedaan om in de documenten ook maar één naam van een informant te beschermen of de naam van administratief ambassadepersoneel. Hierdoor lopen deze mensen, vooral de eerstgenoemden, nu grote risico’s.

Grote kranten als The Guardian, New York Times, El Pais, Der Spiegel and Le Monde, die in het verleden met WikiLeaks samenwerkten, hebben gezamelijk dit onbeschermd en ongeredacteerd verspreiden van data veroordeeld. Assange reageerde er via de Twitter-account van WikiLeaks op door te zeggen: “The Guardian continues to issue false statements. Nepotism in The Guardian has clearly compromised its accountability”.

Ik meen gehoord te hebben zelfs op Radio France International dat Wikileaks gehacked zou zijn in deze zaak. Het is duidelijk dat de elite Wikileaks kapot wil of onder controle.

It has long been known that WikiLeaks lost control of the cables even before they were published. One copy of the secret documents leaked to The New York Times in the fall of 2010, and other media organizations, including The Associated Press, have since received copies independently of the self-proclaimed online whistleblower.

In comments to the AP, Leigh dismissed WikiLeaks’ claims as “time-wasting nonsense.”

He said that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange had supplied him with a password needed to access the U.S. embassy cables from a server back in July of 2010 — but that Assange assured him the site would expire within a matter of hours.

Soms valt men terug op de oude terminologie van merknamen.
De Belgische tak van Union Miniere werd omgedoopt tot Umicore.
De Belgisch Congolese Union Miniere du Haut Katanga (UMHK) werd Gecamines nadat Mobutu den boel genationaliseert heeft. Als ik mij niet vergis, is Forrest ooit bestuurder geweest van Gecamines.

Ik probeer jouw werk niet de degraderen, het valt me alleen op dat men deze naam gebruikt.
In '88 heette het al Gecamines. De enige hoogbouw (naast het nooit afgemaakte Lumumba monument) in 'sasha.
