Belgium's 'most wanted' on the run

BRUSSELS - One of Belgium's most dangerous criminals has escaped jail for the third time, it emerged on Monday.

Nordine Ben Allal, serving a 27-year sentence for a series of violent crimes, escaped from the Nivelles prison on Sunday evening, according to the Belga news agency.

He managed to scale a security perimeter with the help of an accomplice at the other side who threw him a rope attached to a car.

It is the third time Ben Allal has escaped prison and gone on the run.

On 2 October 2000, he faked a leg injury, and on the way to court in a prison van he managed to slip out of his handcuffs and run off.

In January 2001, his younger brother Yacine paid him a visit in jail and during a toilet break, the two men swapped clothes.

Belgium's 'public enemy number one' was recaptured two months later.

The 25-year old has been convicted by the Belgian authorities for a number of serious and violent crimes.

His first conviction was for a hold-up when he was just 19.

Since that time, he has terrorised Belgium with a series of home-jackings, car-jackings, armed robbery and theft.

Among the most serious assaults was a car-jacking in 2000 in the commuter town of Braine-l'Alleud in which the victim died.

Another jeweller who was attacked by Ben Allal now has a life-long disability.

Vakantie ... weet je wel. Ze gaan een minister niet uit haar verlof terugroepen omdat er een gevangene (ook al is hij dan "gevaarlijk") ontsnapt is (tenzij je initialen natuurlijk M.D. zijn). Hij is ondertussen trouwens terug opgepakt ...
