Infections in humans are caused by more than 20 species of Leishmania.[2] Risk factors include: poverty, malnutrition, deforestation, and urbanization.[2] All three types can be diagnosed by seeing the parasites under the microscope.[2] Additionally, visceral disease can be diagnosed by blood tests.[3]

ISIS Fighters Contract Deadly Disease

Over 100,000 ISIS fighters are reported to have contracted the potentially fatal disease Leishmaniasis. Leishmaniasis leaves large wounds which eat away flesh, and spreads rapidly due to pollution and the fighters' poor hygiene

Doctors Without Borders had been trying to cure the disease in the area before ISIS took over. Another humanitarian organization, the Mentor Initiative, is now fighting Leishmaniasis in and around the city of Aleppo.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is the most common form of leishmaniasis, while visceral leishmaniasis is a severe form in which the parasites have migrated to the vital organs. The infection appears as red sores (hence its nickname) on the skin a few weeks or months after being bitten by the sand fly that erupt weeks to months after the person affected is bitten by sand flies. The infection can also damage the liver and spleen and cause anemia. The sores can cause permanent, ugly scars if untreated.

Ik heb nergens in betrouwbare media bevestiging gevonden van dat bericht. Als de ziekte er woedt, zal ze zich trouwens niet beperken tot IS-strijders. Insecten hebben de gewoonte geen onderscheid te maken tussen strijdende partijen.

Het stond als kop in HLN en ja , de bevolking die onder hun terreur leeft zal er ook last van hebben. Vooral in Raqqa zou het een ware ramp zijn.
