The world is entering a period where once-robust democracies have grown fragile. Now is the time to figure out where we went wrong.

They also depend on a broad and deep commitment to the underlying values of a liberal society, most notably tolerance. As events in Iraq, Afghanistan, and several other places demonstrate, however, writing a constitution, forming political parties, and holding “free and fair” elections won’t produce a genuinely liberal order unless individuals and groups in society also embrace the key liberal norms as well. This sort of cultural and normative commitment cannot be developed overnight or injected from outside, and certainly not with drones, special forces, and other instruments of violence.

It is also abundantly clear that post-Cold War liberals underestimated the role of nationalism and other forms of local identity, including sectarianism, ethnicity, tribal bonds, and the like. They assumed that such atavistic attachments would gradually die out, be confined to apolitical, cultural expressions, or be adroitly balanced and managed within well-designed democratic institutions.

But it turns out that many people in many places care more about national identities, historic enmities, territorial symbols, and traditional cultural values than they care about “freedom” as liberals define it. And if the Brexit vote tells us anything, it’s that some (mostly older) voters are more easily swayed by such appeals than by considerations of pure economic rationality (at least until they feel the consequences).

Such traditional sentiments will loom especially large when social change is rapid and unpredictable, and especially when once-homogeneous societies are forced to incorporate and assimilate people whose backgrounds are different and have to do so within a short span of time. Liberals can talk all they want about the importance of tolerance and the virtues of multiculturalism (and I happen to agree with them), but the reality is that blending cultures within a single polity has never been smooth or simple. The resulting tensions provide ample grist for populist leaders who promise to defend “traditional” values (or “make the country great again”). Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be, but it can still be a formidable political trope.

Let’s review the evidence. Thirteen years after she and Bill left the White House in 2001 “dead broke,” Hillary regaled the well-fed bankers and financial managers at Goldman Sachs and BlackRock, Inc., with tales of her humble lifestyle before she and Bubba learned how to spin the dross of “public service” into the finest gold access and protection money can buy: “I do think there is a growing sense of anxiety and even anger in the country over the feeling that the game is rigged. And I never had that feeling when I was growing up. I mean, were there really rich people, of course . . . but we had a solid middle class upbringing. And now, obviously, I’m kind of far removed because the life I’ve lived and the economic, you know, fortunes that my husband and I now enjoy, but I haven’t forgotten it.”

Forget that those “fortunes” came from the very rigging she was supposedly decrying; as secretary of state, Hillary had to deal with lots of unsavory characters — but sometimes their natures were made sweeter by their touching thoughtfulness toward the Clintons.

(See: “On favors.”) And a far greater threat than murderous Muslims adhering to a fanatical 7th-century religious ideology lurks right here at home — those pesky Roman Catholics and their silly 2,000-year-old faith. The bigotry shown by her campaign aides is a hint of what’s to come under a Hillary administration: continuing pressure on Catholics to adapt to contemporary “progressive” social-justice norms. Not that she’s likely to put it so bluntly, especially during the campaign. That might alienate potential Catholic voters.

Russian TV: U.S. Could Stage Fake “Provocation” to Launch War

Noting that the United States had now moved on to “Plan B” in Syria – directly targeting Syrian and Russian military forces – Kisiliov warned that Washington could be preparing stage a contrived false flag event to justify the new assault.

“Can a provocation used to start a war be excluded?” asked Kisiliov.

Given the experience of the beginning of the world wars, the first and second, provocation worked as a trigger,” he added.

“The Vietnam war also began with an American organized provocation,” said Kisiliov, referring to the Gulf of Tonkin incident, an alleged attack on the USS Maddox by North Vietnamese boats that is now widely thought by historians to have never actually happened.

The TV host also cited America’s “false pretenses” under which they launched attacks on Iraq and Libya.

“Because they got away with it, the United States ignored the international law and no longer understands words,” Kisiliov concluded.

As we reported last month, the U.S. State Department warned of terror attacks in Russian cities and even shoot downs of Russian jets if Vladimir Putin continued his fight against ISIS in Syria, remarks that Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova took as a direct threat.

However, Major-General Igor Konashenkov, Russia’s Defense Ministry spokesman, promised that Moscow would shoot back if the United States attempted to launch a “shadow hot war” against Russia and Syria.

Kisiliov’s warning is noteworthy given that the prime time host “enjoys the largest audience among news programs in Russia”.

Kisiliov (alternative spelling Kiselyov) is a controversial but prominent journalist in Russia. He was personally appointed by Russian President Vladimir Putin to head the new official Russian government-owned international news agency Rossiya Segodnya in December 2013.
