I posted elsewhere how the control of forums became a big problem for
News 24. Eventually they decided to close their forums. However they
had to come up with some kind of other "feedback" mechanism in order to
keep readers interested and feeling involved (and perhaps to keep hit
counts up).

That kind of forum is notoriously hard to control. Anybody causing
trouble is going to have multiple sign ons in case one gets canned, and
can always register again anyway. Even if there is a policy it can be
enforced by deleting posts after they've been made - and nobody's going
to hire somebody just to moderate some chat forum.

What needs to be remembered is that this is just a posting on a forum -
not reportage, not editorial. What Schorsch is trying to make of it I'm
not sure.

You can't even liken it to a letter in a newspaper, because newspapers
receive a letter, read it, perhaps edit it for brevity and can decide
if they want to print it or not. With the Internet you generally don't
have that kind of control.

And, of course, if the SABC did have a properly moderated forum - such
as the one's you can still have on usenet where all posts must be
specifically approved before they are published - then their would be
complaints about state censorship.

Just to show that the SABC is completely even-handed in this regard, I
present for your consideration this:
