De Saharawis: een vergeten volk
 

In November 2006 vond in Spanje een internationale conferentie plaats over de bevrijding van de Saharawis, een volk dat leeft in de westelijke Sahara (de République Saharaui), en op een wreedaardige manier onderdrukt wordt door de Marokkanen.

Tijdens de conferentie werd de bloedige repressie aangeklaagd, de massale schendingen van de mensenrechten en de systematische martelingen.

De misdaden van de Marokkanen zijn vooral gericht tegen vrouwen. 35% van alle verdwenen personen zijn vrouwen.

Niettenstaande het feit dat de conferentie werd bijgewoond door landen uit vijf continenten, waaronder België (zie lijstje in eerste citaat hieronder), heb ik er niets van gemerkt in de nationale berichtgeving.

La conferencia EUCOCO saluda y apoya la resistencia del Pueblo Saharaui en los territorios ocupados y rinde homenaje de forma muy especial a las victimas de la represión marroqu�*. En este marco, la conferencia denuncia vigorosamente las violaciones masivas de los Derechos Humanos por parte de las autoridades marroqu�*es en los territorios ocupados, as�* como la tortura sistemática y las represalias sangrientas inflingidas contra los ciudadanos saharauis. Asimismo, queremos denunciar la violencia sexista que se ejerce contra las mujeres saharauis contra las mujeres, lo que supone que un 35% de las personas desaparecidas sean mujeres. La conferencia saluda a las asociaciones y los partidos pol�*ticos marroqu�*es que apoyan el derecho del Pueblo Saharaui a la autodeterminación.

Morocco virtually annexed the northern two-thirds of Western Sahara (formerly Spanish Sahara) in 1976, and the rest of the territory in 1979, following Mauritania's withdrawal. A guerrilla war with the Polisario Front contesting Rabat's sovereignty ended in a 1991 UN-brokered cease-fire; a UN-organized referendum on final status has been repeatedly postponed.

The International Court of Justice in The Hague issued a ruling in 1975 that neither Morocco nor Mauritania has any claim to the territory of Western Sahara. Mauritania could not militarily, politically or economically sustain fighting against the POLISARIO troops and signed a peace agreement in 1979. They acknowledged the sovereignty of the Western Saharan nation in exile, the Saharan Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) which was founded in 1976. On the other hand, Morocco refuses to this day to relinquish any claims to Western Sahara.
But the 200,000 Saharawis in the camps have proven they will not give up either. They have chosen a life in exile, hundreds of miles from home, rather than live under the rule of a king whose reign has sought to erase their existence.

Vooral tegen vrouwen? Ik zou eerder zeggen vooral tegen mannen. Tenzij die andere 65% kinderen zijn. ;-)

Ik heb daar ook al tevergeefs aandacht op proberen te richten. Reeds enkele jaren bekommer ik me om die casus in een door God blijkbaar vergeten stuk woestijnoase.

Maar ik vrees dat tegen de tijd dat de Marokkaanse vorst instemt met een referendum, de afspraken rond wie mag stemmen zullen veranderen en de meerderheid van de Marokkaanse kolonisten naar de stembus trekt.

Jammer. Waarom Oost-Timor wel, en de Westelijke Sahara niet, vraag ik me af. Misschien ging Annan niet graag snoeien in zijn Ghanese achtertuin.
