Israeli army declines comment on Syria bombing report







JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The Israeli military had no immediate comment on Thursday on a Syrian news report that Israeli aircraft bombed targets in Syria.
"We have no knowledge of anything like this. We will get back to you," a military spokeswoman said by telephone from Tel Aviv.
An Israeli military source said the air force had been carrying out a major exercise in northern Israel this week.
The official Syrian news agency said Syrian air defenses fired at incoming Israeli planes which crossed into Syrian airspace after midnight (5 p.m. Wednesday EDT).
Tensions between the two neighbors have been high in recent months, with some Israeli intelligence officials suggesting President Bashar al-Assad's administration might be ready to try to take by force parts of the Golan Heights, which Israel captured in the war of 1967.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who launched his forces against Syrian-allied Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon a year ago, has been at pains to stress that he has no hostile intentions toward Damascus.
Olmert has said he would like to reopen peace negotiations that have been stalled for seven years.
In June last year, Syrian guns fired on Israeli aircraft that crossed the border. Israeli jets bombed an empty Palestinian militant training camp in Syria in October 2003.

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) -- Syrian air defenses opened fire on Israeli aircraft that violated Syrian airspace, a Syrian military spokesman said Thursday.
The Israelis broke the sound barrier and "dropped ammunition" over deserted areas of northern Syria overnight, the spokesman was quoted by the official Syrian Arab News Agency.
"We warn the Israeli enemy government against this flagrant aggressive act, and retain the right to respond in an appropriate way," the Syrian spokesman said.
It was not clear if Syria was accusing the Israelis of using warplanes or some type of other aircraft such as drones.
"The Israeli enemy aircraft infiltrated into the Arab Syrian territory through the northern border, coming from the Mediterranean heading toward the eastern region, breaking the sound barrier," the spokesman said. "Air defense units confronted them and forced them to leave after they dropped some ammunition in deserted areas without causing any human or material damage."
Israel's army said it was looking into the report.
Israel acknowledges flying over Lebanon routinely, but it is unclear how often its aircraft fly over Syria.
At the beginning of last summer's war against Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon, Israeli warplanes buzzed the palace of Syrian President Bashar Assad in what analysts called a warning to Damascus. They also flew over Assad's summer home in the coastal city of Latakia, after Syrian-backed Palestinian militants in Gaza captured a young Israeli soldier.

Syrië is een schurkenstaat. Het steunt ondermeer de Soennietische terreurgroep Hamas met geld en wapens die Israëlische kinderen en vrouwen doden. Hamas wordt gefinancieerd vanuit Saudi-Arabie (waarom de VS dat kraantje niet dichtdraaien is een mysterie voor mij), Iran (raar genoeg) en Syria (er zijn dingen die duiden op wapensmokkel).
