Ook Mercedes presenteert zijn E-Actros, goed voor 500 km rijbereik.

Productievolume is pas gepland in 2024.

Daimler has confirmed that it is equipped with three battery packs for a total capacity of “over 600 kWh”:

The eActros LongHaul presented at IAA provides a preview of the design language of the production vehicle with its clear contours and an LED light strip in the front area. Mercedes-Benz Trucks has also announced additional information on the eActros LongHaul series. Three battery packs provide an installed total capacity of over 600 kWh and two electric motors, as part of a new e-axle, generate a continuous output of 400 kW and a peak output of over 600 kW.

The company is talking about a range of “around 500 km” on a single charge. That’s about 310 miles. Mercedes-Benz didn’t confirm if that was with a full load, but we assume it’s the case.

Interestingly, Mercedes-Benz confirmed that eActros LongHaul’s battery pack is using LFP battery cells:

The batteries used in the eActros LongHaul employ lithium-iron phosphate cell technology (LFP). These are characterized, above all, by a long service life and more usable energy.

While it might lose some energy density with the LFP cells resulting in a shorter range than say the Tesla Semi with 500 miles, Mercedes says it is gaining in longevity.

The company says that it expects the vehicle to last for over 10 years and 1.2 million km (750,000 miles):

In addition to the tractor unit, Mercedes-Benz Trucks will also produce rigid variants of the eActros LongHaul right at market launch. This will offer customers numerous other possible use cases in fully electric transport. Development engineers at Mercedes-Benz Trucks are designing the eActros LongHaul so that the vehicle and its components meet the same durability requirements as a comparable conventional heavy long-distance Actros. That means 1.2 million kilometers on the road over a period of ten years.

Mercedes also notes that the truck’s battery pack can be charged from 20 to 80% in “well under 30 minutes” when using a charging station with an output of “about one megawatt.”

The eActros LongHaul will be built at Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ existing assembly line at the Wörth truck plant. The first prototypes are already undergoing testing and new “near-production prototypes” are going to be tested in real-world use cases by customers next year.

Volume production is planned for 2024.
Uiteraard zijn er nog enkele merken die naar electrificatie gaan van hun zware vrachtwagens, zoals Scania (VW Groep):

Volvo, Daimler And Traton Agree On JV Charging Network For Trucks

They will install in Europe at least 1,700 charging points within 5 years.

Within five years of the establishment of the JV (so by the end of 2026 or so), the network is expected to consist of 1,700 charging points "on and close to highways as well as at logistic and destination points" (the number of stations is not disclosed). That's about €300,000 per single charging point (most likely DC fast charger, but the power level was not yet announced).

According to the press release, the fast charging will be tailored to the 45-minute mandatory rest period (after 4.5 hours of driving) in Europe.

Just like in the case of Ionity, the new network will be open for new partners and additional investments to gradually expand the number of stations:

"The number of charging points is with time intended to be increased significantly by seeking additional partners as well as public funding. The future JV is planned to operate under its own corporate identity and be based in Amsterdam, Netherlands."

According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), Europe requires up to 15,000 high-power public and destination charging points for heavy-duty vehicles by 2025, and up to 50,000 by 2030. It means that the new joint venture will cover only basic needs for long-distance travel.

Mercedes Benz showcases its Aero Trailer concept in Belgium

Mercedes has managed to reduce the frontal wind resistance of the Actros tractor unit by 15 percent, through 2,600 hours of wind tunnel testing. The results can be seen clearly on the front face of the unit, which sports a number of subtle winglets, a plate, and channels to control airflow - the influence of all those millions spent on Formula 1 aero research, no doubt.

The logical next step is clearly to apply the same rigorous wind-tunnel work to the trailer half of the equation, and that's exactly what Mercedes has done.
...

In total, Mercedes claims an additional 18 percent wind resistance reduction in the tractor-trailer combo, which should equate to a five percent reduction in fuel use. For the average year of a busy trailer, that represents 2,000 liters (530 US gallons) of fuel and an astonishing 5 tons (4.5 tonnes) of CO2.

The trailer is still a concept at this stage, since the extension at the rear will require a change in legislation. The reported benefits are so significant, however, that this may be achieved in due course.
Die zou er dan in 2024 zo kunnen uitzien:
