Number of oil spills from tankers in 2022
For the year 2022, three large spill (>700 tonnes) and four medium spills (7-700 tonnes) were recorded.
Two of the large spills occurred in Asia and one in Africa. The medium spills occurred in North America, Asia and Africa.
This brings the decade average to almost 6 spills (>7 tonnes) per year. This is on a par with the average for the 2010s.

The total volume of oil lost to the environment from tanker spills in 2022 was approximately 15,000 tonnes. More than 14,000 tonnes of this can be attributed to the three large incidents.

Over the past half century, statistics for the frequency of spills greater than 7 tonnes from tankers have shown a marked downward trend, as illustrated in Figure 1 below.
The average number of spills per year in the 1970s was approximately 79. This decreased by over 90% to 6 in the 2010s and remains at a similar level for the current decade.

Environmental impact
The leak raised concerns from environmentalists due to the transfer of tar sands through the pipeline, which are more toxic than crude oil and can sink in water.[3]
Pipeline investigation
The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration began an investigation into the leak.[6] The Environmental Protection Agency dispatched two coordinators, who determined there was no impact to drinking water in the Washington County area.[9]
Economic impact
The price of crude oil rose 5% following the shutdown of the Keystone Pipeline, before receding. The surge occurred during a selloff of the price of oil, following the 2021–2022 global energy crisis.[6] TC Energy declared a force majeure upon news of the leak.[10]

Uit de omstreden Keystone-pijpleiding in de Amerikaanse staat Noord-Dakota is deze week 1,4 miljoen liter olie weggelekt. In totaal is 2.100 hectare land aangetast. Het is nog niet duidelijk hoe het lek precies ontstaan is, ingenieurs zijn nog altijd in de weer om het te herstellen.

Milieuramp met Amerikaanse pijpleiding Keystone stuurt olieprijs hoger
De lager dan verwachte inflatie in de VS in november duwde de prijs voor Noordzeeolie (Brent) dinsdag opnieuw boven 80 dollar per vat. Maandag zaten de olieprijzen ook al stevig in de lift. De prijs voor Amerikaanse olie won sinds maandag 4 dollar per vat en nadert opnieuw 75 dollar.
Vorige week was de olieprijs gedaald naar het laagste punt in een jaar uit vrees dat een wereldwijde recessie de vraag zou schaden. De prijs voor ruwe Noordzeeolie stond in juni boven 120 dollar per vat, maar daalde in de jongste weken door de wankelende wereldwijde economische vooruitzichten.
Die daling bleek een kort leven beschoren. Keystone, een cruciale pijplijn tussen Canada en de VS, werd gesloten nadat afgelopen weekend meer dan 14.000 vaten waren gelekt. Dat deed de prijs fors opveren. Nieuwsmedia noemen het lek in een natuurgebied in de staat Kansas de grootste Amerikaanse milieuramp in tien jaar. Handelaren vrezen dat het lang zal duren om de oliepijpleiding schoon te maken en te herstarten.
