Exclusive: Ukraine army chief reveals the strategy behind Kursk incursion
Russia had been planning to launch a new attack on Ukraine from the Kursk region before Kyiv’s surprise cross-border incursion, Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi told CNN in an exclusive interview Thursday.
In his first television interview since becoming military chief in February, the general told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour that he believed the Kursk operation had been a success.
“It reduced the threat of an enemy offensive. We prevented them from acting. We moved the fighting to the enemy’s territory so that [the enemy] could feel what we feel every day,” Syrskyi said, in a rare interview that offered a candid assessment of the war.

Nochtans, als je een aanval beraamt, concentreer je een leger in het gebied waar je jeaanval wil beginnen. Er was daar geen concentratie. Wel integendeel, bijna niks. Ook de reden dat de Oekrainse Armee er op enkele weken tijd in slaagde om 1000 km2 te stoefen: het was militair bijna niemandsland.
Dat bewijst dat Sierski loog, zelfs dom loog, de oorzaak van hun initiele succes was gevolg van de kleine Russische militaire aanwezigheid.

Ukraine planned to seize a nuclear power plant during its large-scale incursion into Kursk Region, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has reported, adding that officials in Kiev had incorrectly assumed that a potential accident would only be harmful to Russia.
Speaking at a media briefing, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, the head of Russia’s Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Defense Forces (RChBD), claimed that one of Ukraine’s priority targets for the August incursion – which has since been contained – was the Kursk nuclear power plant, located some 60km from the border.
He also claimed that the Defense Ministry had gained access to a report from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, which dismissed any dangers to the country stemming from this operation. The document, the general said, insisted that “only the Russian Federation would be exposed to radioactive contamination in the event of an accident” because of the direction of the wind.

After failing to seize the Kursk NPP, Ukraine tried to recapture the Zaporozhye NPP, the largest facility of its kind in Europe, which has been under Russian control since the early days of the conflict, Kirillov said. En nu is de Russische Armee bezig met de stad die de Oekrainse Armee onderaan Kursk Oblast veroverde en bezette, te omcirkelen en af te snijden, intussen een bekend en resultaat gevende gebleken scenario.
