De VS is leading from behind uiteraard. Dat kan je al merken aan het woordgebruik en de beelden van de westerse nieuwsitems.
When Al Qaeda is attacking the US, they're terrorists. When Al Qaeda (under a new name) is attacking a government that the US has also tried to overthrow, they're suddenly "rebels." — @aaronjmate
Citaat:
At the age of 22, Abu Muhammad al-Julani rose quickly through the ranks of al-Qaeda in Iraq. In 2006, he was arrested by American forces and imprisoned at US military bases. He was released in 2011, and in the same year Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi appointed him to lead Al-Qaeda in Syria during the ongoing civil war.
Julani established al-Nusra, the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda, and began waging jihad against Syrian President Assad. Baghdadi sought to merge al-Qaeda in Iraq and al-Nusra in Syria into ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), however, Julani successfully avoided the merger and became closely associated with Qatar instead.
The United States launched an anti-ISIS campaign while Julani was building up his base in the North-West of Syria, in Idlib and Aleppo. ISIS was defeated and Baghdadi was killed, along with most prominent leaders of al-Qaeda, but Julani survived. With the help of Russia and Iran, Syria has managed to recapture most of the non-Kurdish territory of the country, except for Idlib and the surrounding area.
After the Astana ceasefire talks, the conflict was brought to a halt. Julani changed the name of Al Nusra to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. During this period, his forces were funded and trained by Turkey, and he became a media darling in the West as a "moderate rebel". In one interview he stated that '[...] it's completely against our policies to target European or American people'. He also called for Russian civilians to be attacked by former Soviet Muslims.
On 27th November of 2024, the al-Qaeda terrorist and al-Baghdadi's top lieutenant decided that it was time to strike against Bashar Assad's "authoritarian regime".
