Cold Engine Idling vs. Driving Off: Scientific Evidence on Engine Wear

There are many misconceptions still present, so please let me share some actual research data about cold starts. A scientific study published in Open Engineering analyzed engine wear at cold temperatures, and the findings are pretty eye-opening:

One cold start at around -5°C/23°F causes wear equivalent to driving 99.2 kilometers (about 62 miles). This isn't theoretical - it's based on detailed measurements of cylinder wear.

The study found that cylinder wear during cold starts happens primarily because:

- The initial oil layer doesn't provide sufficient lubrication during startup

- It takes time for oil to reach proper circulation and temperature

- Corrosive acids form and condense on cold cylinder walls

- Most interesting finding: After 750 cold starts, researchers found significant cylinder wear that could reduce engine lifespan by roughly 100,000 km (62,000 miles).
De eerste early adopters (in Canada toch) van E-bussen wisten dit toen al:

Bamber said the city had to do some initial upgrades to its electrical infrastructure in order to be able to charge the buses, but after crunching the numbers found the city is already saving money by using the electric buses.

"We're finding a substantial savings in our cost-per-kilometre, compared to the diesel bus," he said.

The city estimates electric buses cost about nine cents per kilometre for fuel, compared to 45 cents per kilometre for diesel buses.

"It's a win all the way around, as I see it," Bamber said.
En E-bussen hebben nu wslk veel minder nadeel van de koude dan ICE-bussen.

Optimal electric bus performance by pre-conditioning your buses

In the ever-evolving landscape of sustainable transportation, electric buses have emerged as frontrunners in reducing emissions in the mobility sector. However, one challenge electric bus operators face, especially in colder climates, is the potential impact on range due to heating requirements, but there is a relatively simple way to minimise this impact.

Pre-conditioning

Often, it can be a matter of utilising your charging system to its full capacity, meaning that, while your bus is charging, it can simultaneously heat the bus, creating a warm bus before operation starts.

Heating systems operate by using external electricity to warm up the bus before it hits the road. This not only ensures passenger and driver comfort but also reduces the strain on the battery during operation in colder climates. By heating the bus while it’s still connected to the charging station, operators can minimise the need for heating during the journey, preserving valuable battery power for driving.
