FAIRBANKS, Alaska — The first aircraft in a large group of F-35A Joint Strike Fighters embarked on a transfer to an Alaska military base.

The aircraft were scheduled to begin arriving at Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks on Tuesday afternoon.

The base expects to receive 54 jets and an additional 1,300 personnel by December 2021. Two aircraft per month are scheduled to arrive after the initial group of jets.

Two squadrons of F-35As will join the reactivated 356th Fighter Squadron with the 18th Aggressor Squadron of F-16s and the 168th Air Refueling Wing.

Alaska’s congressional delegation including Republican U.S. Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan as well as Republican U.S. Rep. Don Young welcomed the arrival of the jets, which Murkowski said strengthens the nation’s defense capabilities and is a "milestone” for the Arctic region.

“This has been a long time effort by the Alaska Congressional Delegation, the Tiger Team, and the military, and I congratulate everyone who played a part in making this a reality,” Murkowski said in a statement. “The importance these squadrons of F-35s will play in our national defense, while also providing our airmen with incredible, real-world training is unparalleled.”

Alaska will soon be home to “more than 100 fifth-generation fighters” and the arrival will secure Alaska's position as “the most strategic place in the world,” Sullivan said in a statement.

“The arrival of the first F-35As today is a bright spot in the middle of a challenging time — for Alaska, for Fairbanks and North Pole, for the U.S. Air Force and, most importantly, for our nation’s security,” Sullivan said.

The transfer of the jets to Eielson was announced in 2016. The arrival of the aircraft will bring pilots, maintenance personnel and their families to Fairbanks, Young said in a statement.

Years ago, Eielson Air Force base was facing closure” Young said. “We not only prevented that, but with the delivery of the F-35, Eielson has come back even stronger.

The crash of an F-35 stealth fighter jet that went missing for more than 24 hours after the pilot ejected was caused by pilot error, a Marine Corps investigation found—but multiple system failures and bad weather contributed to the incident.

An F-35B jet was flying in heavy rain near Joint Base Charleston on Sept. 17, 2023, when the pilot ejected, landing in a North Charleston neighborhood. But the F-35 stayed in the air for about 11 minutes after the ejection because of the jet’s autonomy flight-control systems, according to a Marine Corps investigation released today.

Partly due to the plane’s stealth coating, it took about 30 hours for authorities to find the jet—during which social media users raised a number of strange theories and jokes about what could have happened. It was eventually found 64 nautical miles northeast of Joint Base Charleston.

The investigators pinned the blame for the crash on the pilot, but said an “electrical event” caused multiple system failures—including both radios, the transponder, the tactical air navigation system, and the instrument landing system. The helmet-mounted display—the pilot’s primary display system—and the panoramic cockpit display were not operational at least three times, the investigation said, which caused the pilot to become disoriented during the heavy rainstorm.

“The pilot incorrectly diagnosed an out-of-controlled flight emergency and ejected from a flyable aircraft, albeit during a heavy rainstorm compounded with aircraft electrical and display malfunctions,” the investigation says.

100 miljoen blussen.

GAO acknowledged that its report was the latest in a series of concerning reports about Joint Strike Fighter readiness: In September 2023 it has pointed out maintenance challenges driving down mission-capable rates; and in April 2024 had found that the Pentagon’s projected F-35 sustainment costs had ballooned from $1.1 trillion in 2018 to $1.58 trillion in 2023.
