FBI agents being sent to Iraq to aid in antiquities-looting case
Summary from the U.S.
More than two dozen FBI agents are being sent to Baghdad to help international law-enforcement officials recover priceless antiquities and artifacts that were looted from Iraq's national museum during and after the battle for Baghdad. (8) Two cultural advisers to the President Bush administration have resigned in protest over the failure of U.S. forces to prevent the wholesale looting of priceless treasures from Baghdad's antiquities museum. (3) Some experts, meanwhile, say that part of what seemed like random looting was, in fact, a carefully planned theft, and some of the thousands of stolen artifacts may already be on the black market. (5) An international group of archaeologists and museum directors agreed today to send an emergency mission to Iraq to assess the damage suffered by the National Museum and other Iraqi cultural institutions in the looting that followed the fall of Saddam Hussein's government . (2) The U.N. cultural agency gathered some 30 art experts and cultural historians in Paris to assess the damage to Iraqi museums and libraries looted in the aftermath of the U.S.-led invasion. (13) Experts at an international meeting said some of the looters who ravaged Iraqi antiquities appeared highly organized and even had keys to museum vaults and were able to take pieces from safes.
