"DJ French Riot Police Injured After Clash With Assailants

PARIS (AP)--Three riot police officers were injured when masked assailants attacked them with crowbars and baseball bats in the southern French city of Pau, police said Sunday.

The incident comes after several similar attacks on police in troubled neighborhoods around the country in recent months, reflecting lingering tensions after three weeks of riots in neglected housing projects a year ago.

In the latest clash, six riot police officers were patrolling Friday night in the Ousse des Bois quarter of Pau when a group of about 40 masked attackers set upon them, wielding crowbars and baseball bats and hurling stones, said Pascal Bourgeois, regional representative of the SGP-FO police union.

One of the officers fired several shots in the air and the crowd dispersed.

Three of the officers were in the patrol car, but the three who were on the street all suffered injuries to their legs and backs, Bourgeois said. The patrol car was pelted with stones.

Bourgeois said the incident appeared premeditated, and said that an increasing number of cars have been torched in such neighborhoods recently. Burning cars became a symbol of last year´s riots, which were driven by pent-up anger over unemployment, alienation and discrimination against France´s minorities, especially Muslims of North African and African origin."
