Net nu in Europa hier en daar de kernuitstap terug in vraag wordt gesteld (met een aantal redelijke argumenten), krijgt het debat een hele nieuwe wending. Wetenschappers publiceerden zopas in
Nature, 's werelds meest gezaghebbende vakblad, onderzoek waaruit blijkt dat de materialen waarin kernafval wordt opgeslagen veel sneller verweren en barsten dan eerst was vermoed.
Het onderzoek betekent een zware klap voor de kern-lobby. Materialen die kernafval voor honderden duizenden jaren moesten opslaan, tonen al serieuze verweringstekenen na 1400 jaar en zelfs na 210 jaar. Dit is extreem snel, in vergelijking met de verwachting. Het onderzoek toont aan dat we fundamenteel te weinig afweten over de veiligheid van de opslag van radioactief afval.
