A new wave of brutal pirates is terrorising international shipping lanes. Ruthless modern pirates, armed with rocket-propelled grenades and using motorboats, are a far cry from images of Long John Silver. And attacks are on the rise.

According to the International Maritime Bureau’s annual report, piracy increased by 10 percent last year - the first such rise since 2003. A total of 263 attacks were reported around the world. The waters off the Horn of Africa are among the most dangerous.
