The Council of Europe accuses Flanders of being fascistic

The Council of Europe is very critical about the decision of the Flemish government not to appoint 3 French-speaking mayors in Kraainem, Linkebeek and Wezembeek. The Flemish government cites as the main reason that they have violated the Flemish linguistic legislation. The election papers had been sent in French by default although Dutch is the language that must be used in all official correspondence with local government unless French-speaking citizens request a French version and by law, Dutch should be the language to be used at city council meetings. Also the latter point was not something the three mayors excelled at.

The investigation of the situation of the mayors led by mr. Guégan, a Frenchman. Since French-speaking Belgian politicians have always been very active in lobbying for their cause, most certainly amongst French politicians. This raises questions about the neutrality of the mindset in which mr. Guégan has formed a view on a complex matter like this.

"Democratically elected mayors must be officially appointed," said Mr Guégan.
But are these mayors really elected democratically? They were elected in an electoral region that is unlawful according to the Belgian constitution, a fact that was confirmed by one of the highest legal counsils in this land. We are talking about the infamous "BHV" or Brussel-Halle-Vilvoorde.


Kraainem, Linkebeek and Wezembeek are Flemish municipalities with special language rights, also known as faciliteiten or facilites, for French-speaking citizens. Due to the fact that wealthy French-speaking people from Brussels flee the city, those Flemish villages have become villages with a majority of French-speaking voters. Those people refuse to integrate into the Flemish community, by refusing to learn just a tiny bit of Dutch and by voting for politicians that always want to dig deeper into Flanders to gain territory. Let's say that a thirst for the territory of other people might suit the word "fascism" a bit more then. From the European Counsil it might not be obvious to see, but daily their media are full of disrespectful comments about the Flemish culture and language. They'd say that the Flemish people does not have a language at all but just some dialects that cannot compete with the lingua franca that French is supposed to be.

I hope my letter can convince you that there is no problem of french-speaking people being discriminated in Flanders. We want them to integrate into their community as well as we want that for all people that join us. But the image that the EU and its several institutions always show the world about the Flemish people is one of intolerance and hatred. While all we do is defend our own region. We do not even claim one municipality in the Walloon region. We want to have the Flemish laws respected in the Flemish region. We do not impose laws on Walloon ground. Then why are we fascists while we defend and they attack? Why can they claim our villages while we do not do that vice versa?

Kwam een beetje warrig over. Ik zou nog eens nadenken over de structuur en volgorde waarin je dingen aanbrengt. Zo zou ik de uitleg over de status van die drie gemeenten als drie van de zes faciliteitengemeenten een stuk eerder in de tekst zetten.

Ik ga nu even wat opvallende dingen even aanduiden, met mijn evt. suggestie erbij.

Ik vind dit een goed initiatief, maar deze draad mag weg uit K&K en moet naar pakweg "Staatsinrichting". Ik zal er zelf later nog op terugkomen qua aanvullingen of verbeteringen, maar ik laat het voor vanavond. En ik ben zeker dat anderen mijn verbeteringen ook weer kunnen bijsturen.

Maar vraag de mods of ze deze draad in het gepaste subforum zetten. Hier gaat iets goeds uitkomen. Al was het maar een brief die in de prullenmand terechtkomt. Dan hebben de Vlamingen weer iets om over te radicaliseren. Weg met de EU!
