Spaans of Duits werd niet gebruikt in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden, toch zeker niet in officiële correspondentie, Frans wel, bijna overal in Vlaanderen. Nederlands zal nooit uit Brussel gebannen worden, maar kan wel haar officiële status verliezen, zoals gebeurd is met het Frans in het grootste deel van Vlaanderen.
