Hoe of wat definieer je dan wel fascisme? Is het niet opvallend dat, zoals je zelf duidelijk maakt, fascisme tegen alles en nog wat aangesmeten wordt? Elke keer opnieuw moet ik dan terug denken aan het voorwoord van George Lavan Weissman (1969) voor Trotski's "

Indiscriminate use of the term really reflects vagueness about its meaning. Asked to define fascism, the liberal replies in such terms as dictatorship, mass neurosis, anti-Semitism, the power of unscrupulous propaganda, the hypnotic effect of a mad-genius orator on the masses, etc. Impressionism and confusion on the part of liberals is not surprising.

Zou het dus niet beter zijn om fascisme als een geheel te bekijken? Empirisch in plaats van gevoelsmatig? In context en m.b.t. de maatschappij in haar geheel?
Simpelweg zeggen dat Vlaams Belang of NSV neofascistisch zijn volstaat niet om het te bewijzen, te verklaren en te bestrijden. Bovendien volstaat het ook niet om het (vermeende) fascisme te doorspitten opzoek naar allerhande aspecten die duiden op wat voor de onderzoeker "ondemocratisch", "asociaal", "racitisch" is (= aanvoelt). Want zo start je enkel een debat over welk "aanvoelen", welke persoonlijke mening, nu de juiste is: die van de A die B beschuldigt van fascisme en van zichzelf denkt dat hij een democraat is; of die van B die A beschuldigt van liberalisme en ook van zichzelf denkt dat hij een democraat is?
