Het Vaticaan is helemaal niet stil over de lijkwade van Turijn. Paus Johannes Paulus II gaf hierover het volgende statement in 1998:

Voor het Vaticaan is de lijkwade dus in de eerste plaats een zeer sterk symbool en beschouwen ze de vraag omtrent de authenticiteit als iets dat niet bij hun "domein" hoort. Commentaar van het Vaticaan op dit onderzoek zou dus volledig misplaatst zijn en mij lijkt het juist positief dat ze zich niet met het onderzoek moeien.
