May 7 2004: It started with a few disturbing pictures of naked prisoners piled on top of each other, others hooded and wired with electrodes. Yesterday, the true scale of the degradation and abuse of Iraqi prisoners by US troops became evident with
the release of a new set of images. Worldwide revulsion at the scandal has forced the US president into a public apology and threatened the position of defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
