De aard van wetenschapsfraude

Het feit dat men in Nederland duidelijke overschilderingen op portretten via musea en exposities aan het publiek presenteert en de valse, witte/roze verflagen bovenop het originele portret bespreken alsof ze authentiek zijn en door de schilder zelf aangebracht, beschouw ik als fraude: het opzettelijk vervalsen van data, het negeren van data om tot vooropgezette conclusies te komen. Via deze portretten van personen die als bruin en zwart werden beschreven en soms ook in natuurlijke staat werden afgebeeld, houdt men het revisionisme in stand dat de Europese elite wit was.

Scientific misconduct is the violation of the standard codes of scholarly conduct and ethical behavior in professional scientific research. A Lancet review on Handling of Scientific Misconduct in Scandinavian countries provides the following sample definitions:[1] (reproduced in The COPE report 1999[2])
 Danish definition: "Intention or gross negligence leading to fabrication of the scientific message or a false credit or emphasis given to a scientist"
 Swedish definition: "Intention[al] distortion of the research process by fabrication of data, text, hypothesis, or methods from another researcher's manuscript form or publication; or distortion of the research process in other ways."
The consequences of scientific misconduct can be severe at a personal level for both perpetrators and[citation needed] any individual who exposes it. In addition there are public health implications attached to the promotion of medical or other interventions based on dubious research findings.

Obfuscation may be used for many purposes. Doctors have been accused of using jargon to conceal unpleasant facts from a patient; American author Michael Crichton claimed that medical writing is a "highly skilled, calculated attempt to confuse the reader".[1] B. F. Skinner, noted psychologist, commented on medical notation as a form of multiple audience control, which allows the doctor to communicate to the pharmacist things which might be opposed by the patient if they could understand it.[2] Similarly text-basedlanguage, like some forms of leet, are obfuscated to make them incomprehensible to outsiders.

De jongste tien jaar haalden opvallende gevallen van wetenschappelijke fraude het wereldnieuws. De Duitse fysicus Jan-Hendrik Schön, de Zuid-Koreaanse dierenarts Woo-Suk Hwang, de naar de Verenigde Staten uitgeweken Belgische bioloog Luk Van Parijs, onlangs de Nederlandse toppsycholoog Diederik Stapel: allemaal dienden ze toe te geven dat ze hun loopbaan in een stroomversnelling hadden willen gooien door niet te wachten tot ze met meticuleus speurwerk verantwoorde onderzoeksgegevens hadden verzameld. Meestal reageerden ze aanvankelijk gelaten en met schuldbesef op hun ontmaskering. Achteraf stuikten ze in een depressie en verdwenen ze van het toneel. Hun reacties verschilden in de details. Schön vocht het verlies van zijn doctorstitel aan, Stapel gaf hem spontaan terug.

E Een hoogleraar van het Erasmus MC is ontslagen wegens schending van de wetenschappelijke integriteit. Dat maakte het Erasmus MC vandaag bekend. Het gaat om professor dr D. Poldermans.
Het onderzoek dat door hem geleid werd, zou niet altijd zijn uitgevoerd volgens geldende wetenschappelijke normen. Bij één studie zou hij bijvoorbeeld gegevens gefingeerd hebben en zou hij bij het gebruik van gegevens van patiënten geen schriftelijke toestemming hebben gevraagd. Bij verschillende studies zouden onregelmatigheden gevonden zijn of gegevens niet meer te achterhalen zijn.

Vleesonderzoek
Een van de onderzoeken waarbij Stapel heeft gefraudeerd, is het omstreden vleesonderzoek met professor Roos Vonk van de Radboud Universiteit. Vonk had tijdens de studie 'voorbarig conclusies verbonden aan data die ze niet zelf had verzameld en ook niet gecontroleerd'.

Stapel heeft zijn doctorstitel ingeleverd bij de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

The historical method comprises the techniques and guidelines by which historiansuse primary sources and other evidence to research and then to write history. The question of the nature, and indeed the possibility, of sound historical method is raised in the philosophy of history, as a question of epistemology. History guidelines commonly used by historians in their work, require external criticism, internal criticism, and synthesis.
The empirical method is generally taken to mean the collection of data on which to base a theory or derive a conclusion in science. It is part of the scientific method, but is often mistakenly assumed to be synonymous with other methods. The empirical method is not sharply defined and is often contrasted with the precision of experiments, where data is derived from the systematic manipulation of variables. The experimental method investigates causalrelationships among variables. An experiment is a cornerstone of the empirical approach to acquiring data about the world and is used in both natural sciences and social sciences. An experiment can be used to help solve practical problems and to support or negatetheoretical assumptions.
The scientific method refers to a body of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. To be termed scientific, a method of inquiry must be based on gathering observable, empirical and measurableevidence subject to specific principles of reasoning.[1] A scientific method consists of the collection of data through observation andexperimentation, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses.[2]
