The Iranians have hundreds of small boats armed with Russian made anti-ship missiles designed to sink American aircraft carriers. Those would be the N-22 Sunburn (Mach 2.1) and the N-26 Onyx (Mach 3). They also have the Chinese made C-802 which has a 165 kg (364 pound) warhead. They have rocket artillery with ranges of 65, 92 and 130 miles (100, 150 and 210 km). This rocket artillery includes the Zelzal-2 meaning “Earthquake”. It is a 610 mm heavy artillery rocket with a 600 kg (1,323 lb) warhead. The missile is based on the Soviet FROG-7 missile.

Iran has 20 submarines. Their Russian designed torpedoes have a top speed of 360 km/h (223.7 mph).

Vijf minuten en ze liggen allemaal op de bodem van de Perzische Golf.
De Amerikanen zijn duidelijk niet onder de indruk van de Iraanse dreigementen tegen hun vloot:

In January, Tehran set off a potentially dangerous game of one-upmanship with the United States and its allies when it threatened to take control of the strait. Iran eventually backed off its claims to the waterway, but warned the Pentagon not to send Navy carriers back to the Persian Gulf. it was a warning the Pentagon declined to heed, as it sent two carriers through the strait weeks later without incident.
Ook die ze die zogezegde "hundreds of small boats armed with Russian made anti-ship missiles" zien de Amerikanen niet echt als een bedreiging:
Citaat:
Navy leaders are planning to outfit a fleet of destroyers and cruisers in the region with powerful Gatling guns, according to news reports. The weapons are ideal for taking out the small, fast-moving patrol boats the Iranian navy commonly uses to patrol the strait.

Pentagon strategists have long assumed that Iran would use these small boats to swarm U.S. Navy warships if tensions between Tehran and Washington were to boil over. To take on that kind of attack, the U.S. Navy needs a weapon less like "a high-powered ... rifle" and more like "a sawed-off shotgun," Greenert explained. The Gatling guns going aboard U.S. ships would be that kind of weapon, he added.
Blijkbaar enkele gatling guns op hun destroyers installeren is voldoende om die tegen te houden.
