The aged and religion

The proportion of Moslems in the country as a whole is different from the population of Moslems among the elderly.

In the year 1986, about 99.5% of the country’s population were Moslems. This proportion increased to 99.6% in 1996. But, the proportion of Moslems among the aged population was 99.0% and 99.2% in 1986 and 1996 respectively.

A comparison between the proportion of religious minorities in total population of the country and corresponding figures for the elderly shows that the proportion of religious minorities among the aged population is larger than the proportion of religious minorities among total population of the country as a whole. In 1986 and 1996, the proportion of the aged population of religious minorities was twice as much as the proportion of their total population.

Table 1. 10. Relative distribution of total and elderly population (60 years of age and over) by religion, 1986 and 1996

Increased proportion of Moslems in 1996 compared to 1986 and the larger proportion of the elderly among religious minorities compared to their total population might be due to the following reasons:

1. Birth rate among religious minorities is lower than birth rate among Moslems.

2. Emigration is more prevalent among non-aged members of religious minorities than among Moslems.

3. Population growth rate of Moslems is higher than that of religious minorities.
