SLATE - Why Obama’s Israel Trip Is One Big Mistake19 maart 2013 - Netanyahu insults the president, backed Romney, and hasn’t moved the peace process. No White House should reward behavior like that, not even from an ally. The White House doesn’t want this trip to be about Netanyahu or his new government. That’s why Obama will address Israeli college students in a convention hall rather than speak to politicians in the Knesset. But when it comes to how this trip will be perceived in Israel, it will be all about Netanyahu and his political fortunes. Netanyahu will be seen as the victor in his battle with Obama, rewarded not only for defying—or standing strongly against, depending on one’s political perspective—an American president. And Netanyahu will learn one powerful lesson from Obama’s visit: I don’t have to do anything on the Palestinian issue. I can continue to expand settlements, focus solely on Iran, and insult the U.S. president, and he will still come and thank me with a two-day dog-and-pony show.

Guardian - Israel to ask Obama to use air strikes in case of Syrian missile transfer17 maart 2013 - US expected to resist Israeli pressure to attack Iran, while Tel Aviv unlikely to yield on Palestine, leaving Syria a common goal. Netanyahu's office concedes that it is more likely to succeed in securing US support over Syrian missiles than to persuade Obama to share the Israeli prime minister's position on Iran. There have been many exchanges between the Israeli and US governments in the run-up to the Obama visit attempting to narrow the gap between their Iran policies. Obama has pledged not to allow Iran to build a nuclear weapon and US officials say they will know when the Tehran regime takes the decision to make a bomb and begins to assemble it.
Israeli officials say it is impossible to be so certain about the course of events, and would like the US and Israel jointly to draw a notional "red line" that in practical terms would prevent Iran having even the capacity to build a warhead.

The Times - Syria chemical gas attack raises stakes for Obama
20 maart 2013 - A chemical attack in Syria yesterday gave a dangerous edge to President Obama’s visit to the Middle East, throwing open the question of whether the Assad regime had crossed a red line that could trigger outside intervention in the two-year war.
