The practice of quoting out of context, sometimes referred to as "contextomy", is a logical fallacy and a type of false attribution in which a passage is removed from its surrounding matter in such a way as to distort its intended meaning. Contextomies are stereotypically intentional, but may also occur accidentally if someone misinterprets the meaning and omits something essential to clarifying it, thinking it non-essential.
Arguments based on this fallacy typically take two forms:
- As a straw man argument, which is frequently found in politics, it involves quoting an opponent out of context in order to misrepresent their position (typically to make it seem more simplistic or extreme) in order to make it easier to refute.
- As an appeal to authority, it involves quoting an authority on the subject out of context, in order to misrepresent that authority as supporting some position.
In either case, while quoting a person out of context can be done intentionally to advance an agenda or win an argument, it is also possible to remove essential context without the aim to mislead, through not perceiving a change in meaning or implication that may result from quoting what is perceived as the essential crux of a statement.

Wat is quote-mining?
"Quote-mining" is een uitdrukking, verzonnen door evolutionisten die door cognitieve dissonantie niet in staat zijn om de betekenis van hele heldere en duidelijke uitspraken van zeer gezaghebbende evolutionisten te accepteren.
Door de cognitieve dissonantie worden zij zeer irrationeel, en gaan zij absurde dingen zeggen, bijvoorbeeld dat iemand die een evolutionistische professor citeert een leugenaar is, en ze kunnen op dat moment niet begrijpen dat dan in feite die evolutionistische professor die geciteerd wordt de leugenaar moet zijn, aangezien die de betreffende uitspraak gedaan heeft.
Ook zeggen zij dan vaak dat het citaat uit zijn contekst gehaald is, en dat het in werkelijkheid het tegenovergestelde betekent van wat er staat.
Wanneer zij dan geconfronteerd worden met de contektst, en het voor een ieder duidelijk is dat de contekst niets verandert aan de betekenis van het citaat, dan gaan ze meestal een stroman aanvallen, hetgeen betekent dat ze iets gaan "bewijzen" wat totaal niet ter discussie stond. Ze zeggen dan bijvoorbeeld dat degene die geciteerd wordt wel degelijk in evolutie gelooft, iets wat door degene die het citaat bracht nooit betwist is. In het laatste stadium vervallen ze meestal in scheldpartijen.
Van de hierboven beschreven stadia kunnen er één of meerdere overgeslagen worden in een discussie. De minder begaafde evolutionisten beginnen meestal gelijk te schelden.

What I am trying to illustrate, of course, is that the accusation of “quote mining” is childish and trivial. Not only does it not contribute to an adult-level exchange of ideas, but it actually inhibits such an exchange. It is perfectly valid to claim that a citation has been taken out of context…As long as you can back it up with a reasoned argument. If you have nothing more to contribute than hurling unsubstantiated accusations of “quote mining” please go back to high school and shoot spitballs and do all the other things that immature adolescents do.
