The Tesla sells well because it is a great car in every aspect, not just because it is an electric car. It is probably the best American car on the market right now and it is actually manufactured in the US. Its price is high, but then so is the price of a Cadillac or a fully featured Mercedes. That is the category the Tesla S is competing in right now. The cheaper, mass market car will come, but they need to increase battery production to lower the cost of batteries first. The "Gigafactory" will (hopefully) do that. It will take some time for prices to come down, though. But then at the current sales levels, Tesla is able to survive and slowly grow. So there is nothing wrong with that.
