A hat belonging to Napoleon which still shows the marks from a musket ball after it was shot at in battle is to go on sale for £500,000.The iconic bicorne hat, Napoleon's trademark, was originally by British aristocrat Sir Michael Shaw Stewart, who snapped it up for 10 thalers, equivalent to just £2, or £150 in today's money.
But it is now the star of a £1.1 million sale of artefacts going on sale 200 years after his defeat at the Battle of Waterloo.Sir Michael discovered the hat in 1814 while making the most of a rare time of peace in Europe to travel with his brother Jack.
Then aged 27, he bought it in Dresden, Germany, from Jean Baptiste Kühnel, the keeper of the city's palace who had been entrusted with it by his nephew who was Napoleon's personal valet.His valet had chosen to preserve the hat after it was hit by a musket ball during the Battle of Friedland, but by 1814 Napoleon had been defeated and the decision was made to sell it.
Napoleon had worn the hat throughout the his triumphant battles with Russia at Eylau and Friedland in 1807 and the resulting Treaty of Tilsit, at which he signed a peace deal with Tsar Alexander I.

Wel, Napoleon liet exclusief twaalf hoeden per jaar maken bij de Parijse hoedenmaker Poupart á 48 franc per stuk. Napoleon z’n valet is waarschijnlijk een handige jongen geweest, een gat erin gemaakt en een mooi verhaal erbij verkocht.
In een Duits museum is de hoed te bewonderen die Napoleon zou hebben laten vallen bij de verovering van z’n koets. Vanaf 13 juni is hij nooit meer vlakbij de koets geweest.
Helaas een reservehoed welke standaard opgeborgen lag in het rijtuig voor nood. De kans is redelijk groot dat hij de hoed mogelijk nooit op z’n hoofd heeft gehad
