The Honda FCX Clarity concept car was introduced in 2008 for leasing by customers in Japan and Southern California and discontinued by 2015. Sales of the Toyota Mirai to government and corporate customers began in Japan in December 2014.[26] Pricing started at ¥6,700,000 (~US$57,400) before taxes and a government incentive of ¥2,000,000 (~US$19,600).[27] Former European Parliament President Pat Cox estimated that Toyota initially would lose about $100,000 on each Mirai sold.[28] As of December 2017, global sales totaled 5,300 Mirais. The Honda Clarity Fuel Cell was produced from 2016 to 2021.[30][31] The 2017 Clarity had the highest combined and city fuel economy ratings among all hydrogen fuel cell cars rated by the EPA that year, with a combined city/highway rating of 67 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPGe), and 68 MPGe in city driving.[32] In 2019, Katsushi Inoue, the president of Honda Europe, stated, "Our focus is on hybrid and electric vehicles now. Maybe hydrogen fuel cell cars will come, but that’s a technology for the next era."[33]

By 2017, Daimler phased out its FCEV development, citing declining battery costs and increasing range of EVs,[34] and most of the automobile companies developing hydrogen cars had switched their focus to battery electric vehicles.
Het verandert sowieso geen reet, want de vele nadelen gaan ook in 2030 niet opgelost geraken. En sowieso al niet als bijna elk merk geen FCEV meer gaat ontwikkelen maar zich volledig concentreert op BEV.

wie niet naar massaproductie gaat van EV gaan we wel zien hoe ze langzaam op die lijst gaan zakken en zelfs verdwijnen (of opgeslokt worden)

En Toyota-wagen is hier het symbool van de teloorgegane waterstofwagen.

Toyota is investing over $13 billion in EV batteries while lobbying to slow everyone else

Toyota announced that it is investing over $13 billion in EV batteries as it is trying to catch up after falling behind in electrification.

In the meantime, the Japanese automaker has led lobbying efforts to slow broader EV adoption.


Toyota has yet to launch a battery-powered electric vehicle outside of China.

Executives for the automaker have often downplayed all-electric vehicles, and instead they have promoted hybrids and fuel cell hydrogen vehicles.

In the meantime, the rest of the industry has moved forward and made impressive progress with dozens of compelling battery-powered vehicles launching over the last few years.

Recently, Toyota has shown signs of finally moving forward with the volume production of battery-electric vehicles.

None bigger than a new announcement from the automaker this week to invest 1.5 trillion yen in battery supply and research by 2030.

That’s over $13 billion USD to secure large amounts of batteries, which is critical to achieving volume production of electric vehicles.

Masahiko Maeda, chief technology officer of Toyota Motor Corporation, said that they want to secure 200 GWh of batteries by the end of the decade:

“We are assuming that we will go beyond the 180 GWh worth of batteries that we are currently considering and will ready 200 GWh worth of batteries or more if the dissemination of BEVs is faster than expected.”

At an average of 60 kWh per battery pack, it would be enough for the annual production of more than 3 million electric cars per year.


While Toyota is finally moving forward with plans to achieve large-scale production of battery-electric vehicles, the automaker is lobbying the US government to slow down electric vehicles.
