When George W. Bush needed a place to crash after campaign stops in St. Louis during the last election, the Texas governor didn’t simply pick up the phone and call the local Motel 6.
Instead, Bush and his top aides often retreated to Missouri businessman Stephen Brauer’s 11-acre estate just outside St. Louis, where they reportedly chatted up one of Bush’s favorite subjects: baseball. Brauer, president of an automotive equipment company and Bush’s pick as the nation’s envoy to Brussels, is part owner (along with fellow ambassador Mercer Reynolds) of the St. Louis Cardinals.
When Bush announced his bid for the White House, Brauer was one of his biggest and earliest supporters, as he was one of the first 25 people to raise $100,000 or more for the Bush campaign. Closer to home, Brauer and his wife, Camilla, personally contributed more than $308,000 to federal parties and candidates during the 1999-2000 election cycle, every cent of which went to Republcans. That doesn’t include another $100,000 Brauer contributed to the Bush-Cheney Inaugural Fund or the $5,000 he donated to Bush’s Florida recount fund.
